exclamation Dx9-win98se-Nview-41.09 PROBLEM

Anybody have any clue why this is happening?

OK, I found a weird problem that I have not encountered until I installed the latest version of directx 9 and it has been driving me freaking crazy since it started. I use nview so I can use the option 'make windows minimize faster' and also the dual view options because I have a dual monitor setup that is great for a whole bunch of things from surfing the internet to checking email to Photoshop and a number of other things.

This is the problem: since I installed dx9 I have been getting all these crazy error messages when I try to move files from one place to another on my computer (which results in explorer.exe shutting down) and especially when trying to download files off the internet. Mostly it was one of those errors that pops up and says "internet explorer has encountered a problem and need to shut down"- then it asks if you want to send a report. I even disabled error reporting in the registry and the same thing happens. This always happens at the end of a file download when the little box comes up that says "transferring file 'XXXXXX' to 'D:\file\demo'. Where 'XXXXXX' is- it is usually something like 'HghfYikj43' or something like that. You know what I am talking about- it only happens when you download executable files. When the error message pops up Internet Explorer shuts down and I lose the download, (pisses me off every time).

Anyway, this only happens when downloading executable files and never when downloading zip files. Sometimes when downloading .exe files that I already tried to download it won't even start them, even if I have already deleted the file that I only got part of. Another odd thing is that even after internet explorer shuts down sometimes I will have the file in the folder but it will not work because part of the executable was 'stripped' when moving.

I thought I had major problems so I reinstalled IE6 sp1 and tried it again, same problem. Then, after a few days trying to figure out what the problem was, I decided to get rid of my second monitor to see if that helped, no dice- then I disabled Nview all together and finally to my surprise, everything worked perfect again. The I ENABLED Nview again and I got all the same errors and I could not download anything or transfer any files from one folder to the next without all kinds of error messages and lockups.

Just to let you know, I UN-Overclocked everything at the first sign of a problem, so it wasn't that. I like the nview features and want to use them, but if that Rundll32 is running in the background my system has major repeatable problems w/ downloading and file transferring. I didn't notice this problem until after the last version of dx9.

I also noticed that the directx box that rotates in the direct draw tests look like they are low res or something, the gray color in the rotating box is kind of pixilated, I was wondering if any of you have noticed this- the color just looks like 8bit or 16bit color.

I am using win98se fully updated w/ the 41.09's and a gf4 ti4200 and of course the latest dx9. I was wondering if all the previous dx9 version files (rc0-rc1-rc2) could still be on my computer causing problems and if I have to manually delete these, and where they are.

My next step is to re-install the Nvidia drivers and see if that helps, but I am thinking that it won't since the problem is so repeatable. I wonder why this is only affecting me as I am sure many other people have the same setup.

I had no other problems w/ nview or the 40.xx drivers before messing around w/ dx9. Any help getting Nview to work w/ dx9 and the 41.09's would be great.

No.

No, I don't use nView and pretty much rip it bodily from my system on install. (One monitor, no need. ) But I'll poke around and see, I've had excellent results on my 98se/dx9/41.09 install, everything is running a bit smoother. Anyway you can get around using nView for now?

Thanks for reply, Yeah, I have disabled Nview for now- and everything works fine. I just reinstalled dx9 from redist and 41.09's and now I am gonna experiment w/ Nview to see if it is still messing thing up.

Have you ever enabled nview and then checked the box in the optons labeled "make windows maximize faster"?- It is amazing how much faster everything is, web surfing, menues and the like. Anyway, no good if it screws up windows.

I think I did once, I didn't have any real pleasant experiences with nView. I didn't notice the menus and windows popping up any faster with that enabled than the kind of speed improvement you can make using TweakUI to cut out the windows/menus lag speed though, have you tried going that route instead?

I've just always assumed nView was somehow evil & wrong, and haven't had any reason to change me mind yet. If it offers some form of usefulness I'd be glad to hear about it.
