Funny drivers?! (for FX5600XT)
I must admint that I haven't updated drivers for a WHILE. Partly because they are all buggy (can't let me turn off the fog - options just don't work in games) - except the oldie 45.28 - and partly because Im lazy, of course, and why update something that WORKS
But to see what progress these drivers made, I tried to give a try to the 71.84 org. ones. All seems to work good, even the nN Tweak 1.71 seems to be a nice toy, yet untill I tried the gaming. First at all, a bloody 60Hz. Second - what - 10fps into the Q3 start?!
I fixed with ReForce the 60Hz (the refreshrate override magicaly disapear from 71.84 ones?!) but can't fix the performance issue.
Okay, might be pretty fu*ked up relase, so let me thy the same, but a Zeropoint ones. Same result, refreshrate override is NOT THERE?!, tought at start, everything seem to working (performance wise) nicely...?! Wait I minute, there is any option I touch and then things go FUBAR?!
Okay, time for the 76.41 ones. Refreshrate override is NOT THERE?!, damn. At start, everything worked well, untill I pushed the overclocking back to the long time tested levels (375/535) for my fact, and suddently, framerate droped next to NOTHING!!!
Now what the fu*ck is this?! nVidia pusnih overclockers by killing the performance or something like it? Looks like this... Could I get away around this by O/C with bios or just get back to older drivers?
I tried 66.93 ones, great, Refreshrate override is there, cool. But same bug. As soon, as I even TOUCH the OC, problems are there and performance is gone. Even disabling the OC did not help.
Now if anyone know, what the fu*k is this, I would love to hear some explaination. The perofmrnace drop is, say, HUGE. Likey I say, almost 300fps is possible with this card and 2600Mhz AXP-M in Q3 timedemo, but when I touch the OC, I get to about 10-20fps. And I can't get around it even completely disabling the OC!!!
Only reinstall of drivers work...

Same result with the 61.77 Omegas...
(read, as soon, as I try OC, the drivers performance is GONE and for forever...)
Now this starting to piss me off

I went back to the 45.28 ones and performance is WAAAAY up.
Just a quick example. Typicaly, on the Q3 first scene (the mirror) is the fps drawn at 32fps. When I get close to the mirror (just forward, then 37fps). This was same with the default clock 234/400Mhz with all the drivers I tested (org 66.81, Omega 61.77, Zeropoint 71.84, org 66.93, 71.84 and even the latest 76.41 ones)
Now I just installed back these great 45.28 ones, and quess what?
42fps on the first scene, 46fps close to mirror with default clocks Now this is more what I like, now let's OC

After changing the clock to the years tested and proved working FarCry stable 375/535 is the fps:
64fps on the main scene and 68fps close on the mirror
Now, who dare to explain me TWO things.
First - why I can't OC with any other drivers that these old, that I even had to mod to recognize 5600XT crap I god left after my FX5700U died?
Second - why my bios settings are ignored and all drivers pull out their default clocks?
...anyone with enought knowledge?

well, i don't know why this is such a big probleme for you - although i have to admit that this is should not be.
look, you found this 45.whatever set which works flawless on your machine.
i think the 6x.xx sets and above are made for the new generation cards.
your 5600 is not such a shining-new-ultra-level-can-everything-you-never-wanted-but-now-you-get-it-card.
live with that "issue". i have seen that a lot of times. as soon as your card is "outdated" on the manufacturers thinking there won't be a set which runs as great as a set which has been written with regard of your card.
every gfx-generation needs its own special "tricks" to get the last few fps out of them. if you want to sell the newer, more expensive cards you have to do driver which let them rock. if you have to drop a few tweaks for older cards - who cares? older cards have good drivers. now you should make some good sets for newer cards.
i don't know if this is true, but i have seen such things over and over again (nvidia and ati did this...i owned a 9700pro before, so i've seen both sides). so i began to think that this is the way the story goes.
use your 45.xx set if this is the set with the best performance and if it has no issues.
just MY 2 cents, not the thinkin of anyone else, especially not dhzp (i wanted to mention this cuz my avatar and sig could make some wrong impressions, e.g. me is talking for dhzp or s.th. like this.)!
happy gamin!

Look, the problem is, that I would like use never drivers, because I have some HDTV playback issues and the never ones also let me enable DoubleScan, witch is pretty neat for picture quality into lower resolutions - and yep, manga games are made for 640x480, no fighting about it, and they look still amazing with DoubleScan
http://doublescan.wz.cz/
I made it happen, anyway
That is one point, another point is, that I would like to UPGRADE my GFX card, yet still want to enjoy the things I enjoyed before - I mean nice VIVID colors in games, instead of ugly fogged crap
I owned old ATI 9100 too. Still have it and hate it. The best ATI joke was some official Catalysts version, witch did not even allow 3D acceleration on 9100 card, so I gived up and get back to nVidia. But it looks like that at least certain cards have strong issues even with nVidia drivers
The performance and the performance drop after OC is pretty much nice example...
And like I say - all my concern is to get drivers, that let these options WORKING just like the 45.28 ones did. It is not 45.xx - any other that 45.28 never make them work correctly, take a look into the screenshots at what caused 45.33, for example!

hmmm...i see...well, maybe i should install rtcw as it is the only game that i own (out of these you mentioned) to see if this problem is there on my card.
what about a new install or another driver set for your mainboard?
did you try everything?
sometimes there are problems on certain driver installations that don't work together...i can't imagine what it is.
and did you try modded or unmodded drivers?

I could let you DL SoF2 out of my FTP server, if you want, PM me for login/access. SoF2 is a good game to test it
Yes, I tried different driver sets for my nForce2 mobo(s), however the very same issue with the 45.28 - versus modern drivers, wher the "fog-off" just did not work was happening not only with different nForce drivers (from the early to the most recent ones), but also on different mobos, like my old Abot ST6R (IP815EP chipset!), and on my Epox 8RDA+ as well, as on MSI KT6V, to my DFI LP B mobo, so no - this shading this has nothing to do with mobo drivers for absolutely sure
Yep, I tried everything. 45.28 are the only one drivers ever where I saw this option works.
Sadly, they work only on rectricted amount of cards...
I tried moded and unmoded drivers too. NO DRIVER EVER worked with the fog on of thingy other that the 45.28 - ever.
Try and see for yourself. I could let you DL the 45.28 on the FTP too, just ask by PM

errrrm, no sorry, i don't download sof2...i don't have to mention why, do i?
well...that doesn't sound good. it really seems that you have to stick with the 45.28 - i have no idea what could be the problem (obviously none of my thoughts worked) i'm so sorry that i couldn't help you.
but i will test rtcw as soon as i am able to do that. that could take a while cuz i'm out of time at the moment. my studies, my girlfriend, driver testin'...

Hope you post test result soon
It is not much pretty into the Wolf, however it do work the way it should work only in 45.28 Detonators, sadly...
I would kill for more nicer drivers where options do work as they should...

Bump for fog off...?
...well, I probably use them anyway, since nVidia fucked up big time with the latest 77.72 with the overlay setting for movies...
(not to mention hiding the critical Refreshrates settings!!!)
WTF is wrong with nVidia?!
