NVidia 6800 Custom/Homemade Heatsink... help!

Anyone here who knows an idea how to put a custom heatsink on Nvidia 6800... I was planning to use an AMD heatsink and attach anything just to hold it in place

anyway, there is no one in the philippines that is supplying the NV 5 Silencer... anyone here knows beside nv5 that works with NV6800 heatsink...?

please help

you need to be really careful, whatever heatsink you use must sit squarely on the chip and be firmly and securely attached or you'll not get good heat transfer from the chip to the heatsink.

Be sure and use silver thermal paste as well between the heatsink and the chip but be careful to only apply a very thin layer as there is potential for a short circuit if it gets on other components or parts of the board.

Maybe try an extra fan thats drawing cool air from outside the case and blowing onto the card first, probably a safer option.

What brand and model card do you have, I have an Asus 6800 Ultra that i could not get working well until i installed another fan drawing cool air from outside and blowing straight onto the card, u need to be sure warm air is not recirculated over the card.

I believe the NV Silencer 5 has no RAM heatsinks, i'm a bit in the same position as you as this cooler is not available in my area either. It is mean't to be a very good unit from what i read.

Are you having problems that you think are heat related ??

What type of case, how many cooling fans in the case.

In most circumstances you need fans at the front blowing cool air in and fans at the back drawing hot air out, side fans blowing in are a bonus to have as well.

Power supply with 2 fans can help as well, will help to draw hot air from the case and force it out.

Some cases even have a fan in the top.

Not sure if there are other coolers available for the 6800, 86 degrees is that after running games or graphics applications ??

ideally you want the lower fans blowing air in and the top ones blowing air out for best cooling, because as we all know the hot air will want to rise above the cool air.

Open the side of your case or put your hand over the fans to make sure they're blowign the right way.

If you jut have a lot of fans sucking air in the wont be moving much air, the air pressure inside of your case is NOT going to build up, cool air is only going to go into your case at the rate the hot air is escaping. I remember when I was helping my friend build his new AMD64 comp, the case came with a rear fan high up above expansion slots, and it was screwed on blowing air in, had to switch it around to suck air out. LOL the power supply fan a few inches away was probably sucking a lot of that air right back out the case before I switched that case fan around.

anyway, if you're two side fans are low, like expansion card level (at least they are on another one fo my friends case), have those and the front fan blow air in, then have your rear and top suck air out, that should provide the best airflow assuming your power supply in the top rear also has a fan sucking air out.

rolleyes

That does help alot.

I was having wierd problems with hanging/crashing with my Ultra until i got a new Antec case that has 2 fans low at front blowing in, 2 fans up under the power supply drawing air out, PS fan drawing air out and other fan as you said right at the height of the AGP port blowing air straight on the Graphics card, haven't had any trace of my problem since getting this case about 2 weeks ago.

I made the mistake also of under estimating how important the air flow was.

Okay as we now know it does have RAM heatsinks as well.

That still doesn't help you get one though !!

Is there not somewhere in the US that will freight to the Phillipines ??

I'm surprised the larger stores in Sydney and Melbourne won't send one over for you.

Smilie

StartX

Try going to www.staticice.com.au its a gadget search engine that list retailers offering the item you search for, and search for the NV5 on there, hopefully there is someone who'll mail order one for you.

Can you get Artic Silver Thermal paste??

A proper application of that onto your current components could drop the temp on a GT from 5 - 10 degrees C from what i've heard on the net.
