Geforce2Go-Update???
Dear computer-experts,
first of all sorry for my bad english, I'm from Austria. The game Silent Hill 2 doesn't function (strictly speaking the menu and the inventory does appear but I can only see a black screen, however playing the game is no problem!). In some forums I read I need an update for my graphics driver... My laptop is very good. Acer Travelmate 634XC (1.8Ghz, 512MB RAM,etc.). The problem according to http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=IO_20011115_7052 is that there is no update for my chip. So I asked Acer for an update, but they only gave me an one year-old driver (http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers...ok/tm_630.html). This driver didn't solve my problem! What can I do? Is there any possibility to get an update for my graphics-driver? LG THOMAS P.S.: I already wrote an e-mail to NVIDIA-Germany today - I hope that they will answer my question... |

Thanks for your answer Sourcer_2002.
No, I have not tried it up to now, because I read the F.A.Q.: If you’re using a notebook equipped with one of NVIDIA’s mobile GPUs, including the Geforce2 Go and Quadro2 Go, be aware that you should always obtain drivers directly from the notebook OEM. Most notebook OEMs provide special customizations and hot key support, which NVIDIA cannot supply. But if you think, I should try it, so then I will do it. I never made an update with NVIDIA's drivers because I always used ATI-graphic chips and i'm not familiar with NVIDIA. So is there an explaination somewhere in the internet how to do an update with detonator? Do I just have to download the latest detonator-version and install it? Is this just a simple setup? Or is it more difficult? You must know I'm not an computer-expert...

O.K. guys, I installed the latest detonator, but there seems to be a problem.
After rebooting everything went unchanged, there is still the old driver installed!!! Nothing has changed. He has not found the new driver. Maybe there is a lock, which prevents you from installing it. I'm frustrated now. I will sell my game and forget the whole story. I do know now, why I like ATI so much! ****Nvidia :-) I wasted my time. LG THOMAS

What driver version do you have, as you may find later ones at other sites - and what OS?
http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Type...&DeviceID=1002 This looks promising! There is also the trick of patching the install file with additional PCI IDs |

On checking a PCI DEVICE list, it seems the Geforce2Go uses a device ID of 112 - NOT present in the normal driver set.
To fake it - no guarantee that it'll work. Unpack the driver set with a suitable archiver. Find the main inf file, and in the [Mfg] section, add %NVIDIA&DEV_0112.DeviceDesc% = NV10, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0112 (if different, just copy and edit the line for _0111) And in the [Strings] sectin near the end, add NVIDIA&DEV_0112.DeviceDesc="Nvidia Geforce2Go" No gurantee that it'll work, but is should make the driver set install - if wrong, you could be looking at FORMAT and REINSTALL - PS. I'm looking at a Win98 driver set, it should be the same procedure for 2000/XP |

Thanks, Matth for your efforts.

My driver version is 3.1.0.0. Biosinformationen: 3.11.0153 I'm using specified ACER-Drivers!!!! Your link is a Dell-Driver. You're right it looks promising, but don't you think it will hurt the system unsing the wrong driver???? Quote:

Today I tried to play Enter the matrix-->doesn't function because it needs DirectX9, and i cannot install iDX9, because of my old drivers. Therefore I better sell my games, than risking to reformat. I hope you have further solutions... LG THOMAS EDIT: I found a cool website: http://www.2good4you.net/phpnuke/mod...p?name=1FileDB The admin of this website promises a functional GeForce2Go-Driver! I tried this modification, but it didn't run! I wrote him, maybe he will repair this driver... I would be very happy then :-)

This one?
http://2good4you.net/fileDB/pafiledb...ion=file&id=37 I would say the Dell driver ought to be pretty safe - as you've already found - if it doesn't like the driver, it won't install it. The 3.1.0.0 sounds like it might be 31.00 - and I'm surprised DX9 won't take it - DX9 should be able to work with drivers from DX7 up, and this is a Directx 8 driver. The FULL version shown for the driver - in advanced display properties, should be 6.13.??.3100 - if my guess is right. http://download.guru3d.com/pafiledb....on=file&id=588 This gives you a hacked INF file (actually for 43.00, but apparently usable with most 40+ driver sets) with ALL the id's in place - much along the lines of my suggested edit. In XP, you should take a restore point before trying nonstandard drivers, but it looks like one Nvidia is very much like another - people are ALWAYS grabbing latest drivers from ANY maker. I'd say - try the DELL - they should either load, or they won't. Last edited by Matth; Jul 12, 2003 at 09:00 AM. |

Hi Matth! Thanks again!

Now I dare to install DX9 and "Enter the matrix" functions. Juhuuu! I was a little bit anxious, because after you have installed DX9, you cannot delete it and I thought that my card is not compatible... O.k. I was wrong. But Silent Hill2 still has the same problem as before: The game functions, the inventory and the menu not! So it must be a driver problem. Quote:
Have a nice sunday, Matth! LG THOMAS

You may be able to adapt the "hack" for Silent hill 2 here (which resolved some display problems) Some were having trouble with movies, others with Menus and inventory A brief rundown on DX9 DirectX9 will interface with DX9, DX8 and DX7 drivers (with DX6 drivers, you will be advised to obtain the FULL "reference rasteriser" from the SDK ... for accurate, but VERY slow operation) The Geforce (256 / 2 / 2MX / 2GO / 4MX) hardware is only DX7 capable, with the Detonator drivers being DX8 from the late 20.xx versions, and DX9 in current 44.x versions. The DX8 feature "point sprites" (often used for impact dust clouds) - is apparently emulated using the texture & lighting engine by the Dx8 or better drivers. From those trouble reports, I doubt that 44.x drivers would be the end of that problem |

Matth, do you know how I can find out my PCI DEVICE NUMBER? In the forum above stands: "open the Registry Editor and search for VEN_10DE..." But I didn't found this. Maybe because I have a german WIN XP? Here I list my device.fix file from Silent Hill 2: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- // single line comments allowed and tabs before main token (VENDOR, DEVICE, DRIVER, HACK) // HACK can be at 3 levels and will be applied in order (VENDOR, DEVICE, DRIVER) // DRIVERs can overlap and HACK will be applied in file order // example // VENDOR FOO 9999 // HACK BROKE_IT 1 // DEVICE BAR 9999 // HACK BUG1 0 // DRIVER a 00000000 00000000 - 00050000 08870C1D // HACK BUG1 1 // DRIVER a 00007000 00000000 - 7FFFFFFF FFFFFFFF // HACK BUG2 2 // ------------ NVidia ------------------- VENDOR OLD_NVIDIA 12D2 HACK DX_CONFIG_CARD_TOTALLY_BROKEN 1 DEVICE Riva128 0018 0019 // looks like alot of non pixel shader GF can't do Non POW2 properly (the screw up screen space UV sometimes!) Geforce2Go has NO PIXEL SHADER support as I read in Internet now. So this is the problem, I just have to deactivate this in device.fix. But how???

Happy gaming - though if it wants DX9, a Geforce 2 based display system may be a shade3 weak for it (turn off excess eyecandy!)
112 was my guess at the Id before The method, if it works in WinXp (I'm on 98) Open Regedit, expand key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Expand key Enum Expand key PCI The Ven/DEV entries should be visible there (Subsys and revision allow even closer pinning down of devices, or driver features specific to certain hardware versions) I had an OEM version Creative soundcard, and had to go hunting for best drivers |
