4x.xx Detonators and SOF2 w/ Compressed Textures OFF

hey everyone,

has anybody noticed excessive jerkiness during gameplay in SOF2 when using any 4x.xx series drivers and "compressed textures" turned OFF? This jerkiness is noticable sometimes right away and sometimes it's not really apparent until several maps have been loaded into the system memory.

If you don't notice the jerkiness with the "Compressed Textures" option turned to "OFF", please post which version Detonators and OS you are using.

You can get all the details of what this problem is all about by reading my replies in the following thread (just look for any reply by me "plexdude"):
http://forums.ravensoft.com/ib/ikonb...;t=18957;st=30

My video card is a Gainward GeForce4 Ti4400 non AGP-8X and I'm currently using Detonators version 43.51 WHQL from Guru3d.com. I've tried many other versions such as 43.03, 41.09, 41.04WHQL, 42.82, 42.30, 43.45 etc. and they all give me the same jerkiness problem.

I would love to get feedback from anybody who's willing to do a little bit of testing with this. I would especially be interested in your findings if you use drivers other than 4x.xx series such as 2x.xx or 3x.xx versions.

Thanks alot

Why would you want compressed textures turned OFF?

Because textures tend to have lots of bad image quality associated with having Compression enabled. Things such as texture discoloration and bad quality textures in the sky which is noticable on pretty much any map. MP_SHOP for instance has a horrible looking sky with compressed textures ON. Turn compressed textures off and you will see how much better it looks trust me. The discoloration I mentioned is noticable on many surfaces. One clear example is on shiny textures such as the ones used in the "kitchen" area of the mp_shop map like the refrigerator and the big grey ventillation chambers right above the stovetops. You will noticed that with compression enabled, these areas appear to have a greenish "tint" to them which are not supposed to be there. Turn compressed textures off and you will notice that indeed this green "tint" is gone. Just bad image quality in general is always a problem whenever compressed textures are turned ON.

In this situation, I'm pretty much screwed either way whether I have the compressed textures turned ON or OFF. Turn them OFF, I get much improved image quality but at the same time, the unwanted side-effect of horrible jerkiness during gameplay (HD light is active right at the moment of each "jerk" as if the map is still being loaded into memory). Turn them ON, and the jerkiness subsides but now I'm stuck with bad image quality.

If any of you read my posts at the Raven forums (via the link I provided in my original post here), you will know that I originally blamed PunkBuster for this jerkiness but later found that disabling compressed textures was the real culprit. However, lately I sill notice a little bit of this jerkiness even with compressed textures turned ON which is why I'm still concerned and bothered by this problem. Granted, the jerkiness is not as bad as it is when compressed textures are turned OFF but it's still apparent nonetheless.

I'm starting to suspect that maybe all 4x.xx series drivers as a whole are the real reason why I'm unable to play SOF2 with compressed textures OFF and not have this "jerky" side-effect. Soon I will try to revert way back to the good 'ol 29.42 WHQL Dets that have always seemed to work pretty good for me in the past.

Quess you'll have to wait for detonator FX to come out? Which hopefully they fix small bugs like this and stuff.
