Video problems with various games
I apologize if I'm not giving enough information or being too unspecific in this post, I'm not sure how to articulate what my problem is so I'll try to do the best I can. I've had this problem as long as I can remember, basically, the problem didn't arise because of a new set of drivers or anything like that.
I have BFG 6800 GT with Forceware 9.1.4.7 drivers. I had used Driver Cleaner (Through safe mode, etc.) to remove all traces of my previous drivers before installing these latest ones, so I don't believe that older drivers are interfering. If someone thinks this is actually the case, I'd be more than happy to try reinstalling the drivers again. I'm currently using Reforce in conjunction with my drivers, I'm not sure if that would affect anything at all. It does seem like my problem is tied to refresh rates at various screen resolutions. My problem is that when I try running the BF2142 demo, the screen maximizes the program and the screen turns black as if it were loading the game. At this point, there's no sound or anything. After about 5 seconds, the game seems to "alt tab" back to the desktop, with the black window from the game occupying the upper left of my screen with about 1/3 of the screen. It's as if the black window from the full screen goes to a smaller, sized down black screen in the upper left corner. Once this happens, the game immediately crashes into the Windows error send report thing. The one that says an error has happened or something and asks me if I want to send a report. I know that BF2142 is prone to crashes, but this isn't the only program that this happens for or else I would just attribute the problems to BF2142 problems. In Counter-Strike: Source, if I attempt to use low resolutions (800x600 or 640x480) I encounter problems, but this doesn't happen at 1024x768. Basically, I can only "play" at 8x6 or 6x4 if I enter the game at these resolutions while enabling the option "play in window". I can only play at 1024x768 in full screen. If I were to enter the game in 1024x768 and try to change video resolution to 640x480 in game, then the game would exit to restart the game like it normally would when you change the resolution, but then as it's about to start the game up again, I get a Windows error, except this time it's one that says "Error memory cannot be read at..." and the memory read error occurs at some random jumble of errors and the game just refuses to load. I can take a screenshot of these separate problems if my description doesn't suffice, I'm just really fed up with these problems. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it. I've been living with these for quite awhile. I can't help but think it could be a possible Direct X issue also, but I've played Civilization IV on this computer and I believe that uses the latest Direct X also. I play other games on my computer and they all run just fine: Counter-Strike 1.6, Warcraft III, Civilization IV all seem to run without problems. It's just high end FPS games that I typically encounter problems with. UT2k4 I did not have problems with, nor Painkiller. On an unrelated note, I know I have some sort of heating issues sometimes, but the weather is quite cool right now so I don't suspect that this is my problem. Do you guys have a recommended cooling solution based on my video card? I'm intending to buy a new case with better ventilation and larger fans sometime soon, but I'll buy it sooner if it's a possible reason for my problem. Thanks again, you're a saint if you manage to fix this problem. |

Never mind, it turns out my problem was just a Reforce thing. Thanks if you read this.

the nvidia drivers have a built in refresh rate manager, in the old cp. you'll need coolbits 3d to unlock it in newer sets though.
