Need help with aspect ratio for my desktop.

My desktop monitor has a 5:4 ratio but most games have a 4:3 as you all already know. I've know you can maintain the aspect ratio on a 8:5 ratio monitor because I use it with my laptop, but can you make a 4:3 resolution game maintain it's aspect on a 5:4 with black at top and bottom. I am using 5.13 official drivers.

If your desired resolution is not directly supported in the driver then you can try this program:

Powerstrip

You can customize your resolution, and lots more...

Thx

Thank you for your response. I have read many different forum messages that talked about this issue dealing with maintain aspect ratio, I was just wondering if there was anything that gave this option for my x800xl gpu on my desktop 5:4 monitor. Hopefully powerstrip will work. Even if it doesn't thx for the link.

This may seem frivolous, but thought I would mention...

1024x768 is an example of a 4:3 resolution - it's the proper ratio - exactly.

An example of a 5:4 resolution would be 1250x1000.

What is the native or recommended resolution of your monitor anyways?

more info

The native res on my desktop monitor is 1280X1024 which is a 5:4 ratio, I've even measured it to make sure. It's an older viewsonic that i bought around 2000. Still works fine. I just want to have my games play with a 4:3 aspect ratio if there is no option for a 5:4 res. Many older games only have res with 4:3 ratio, even some newer games. I just don't want the top and bottom stretched to fit on my screen. I believe that it can be done because my widescreen laptop with an ati x600 mobile has this option with the default drivers. It has an 8:5 ratio with native 1440X900 res. In this case it has black bars on sides. With my desktop to show a 4:3 on 5:4 it would have black bars on top and bottom which i would be okay with because i would rather have smaller viewing area than distorted textures or text, which happens alot in games I play.
