Zero Service Display Error fix?

Hi all.

Im constantly getting a "Zero Sirvice Display" errror while installing any version of cat's which appears to make any game I play crash or BSOD after a random period of time.

Ive searched a lot of forums but any of the proposed fixes on there dont seem to work. Most of them tel me to, and I have done...

Reboot into safe mode
run cat uninstall utility
run driver cleaner (or something of that ilk)
make sure display adapter in device manager says "Standard Display Adapter"
reboot
when "auto Hardware Find" see's the gfx card, point it to the cat .inf file and everything should install ok, but unfortunatly, it isnt. I still get the same error.

has anyone else had this problem and found a 100% bonafide fix? its driving me insane! my specs are:

AMD64 3500xp
2gb ram (2 x 512mb kingston, 2 x 512mb samsung)
Radeon X800XL PCI-E 256mb gfx card
MSI K8N Platinum (nforce 4) mobo, with onboard Creative Labs SB Live chip

Runnnig (well, trying to...) Official Catalyst 5.13 drivers with Win XP Pro SP2

thanks
