Have you tried using a different driver set yet? This would be the first thing I would try to check your "5.13" hypothesis.
Seems like you are correct about the detection failing, as you can get the projector to work right on the 9800. Just to eliminate one more thing, I would connect the projector using the 2m DVI cable you use for your monitor, unless you can not due to the fact that you use DVI-HDMI in this case.
Also, another thing I would try - uninstall all drivers, and run DriverCleaner (see canned instructions below) and then attach your projector. See if it's detected without the drivers - this may point that something with the actual X1600 DVI is not working right as well.
Let us know how it goes.
When you install new drivers, it's recommended you stick with the following scheme:
1. Download latest version of
DriverCleaner Pro
2. Install
DriverCleaner Pro
3. Go to Control Panel, and Remove anything ATI related. This includes any drivers, and preferrably all the tools (ATITool, ATI Tray Tools, RadLinker)
4. Reboot, while rebooting, tap on F8 key, to get the Windows startup menu. Once you have gotten into it, select "Safe Mode" or "Safe Mode with Networking" (if you use a domain to log in).
5. Once in Safe Mode, run
DriverCleaner Pro, tick "Select Multiple Filters" checkbox, and add everything that starts with "ATI", except "ATI IGP" components. Hit "Clean"
5.1. IF you have not done so before, run "Cab Cleaner" from
DriverCleaner Pro as well - this will get rid of any Windows default drivers that may interfere down the road.
6. Reboot into normal mode, and install the new drivers
6.1. If you have issues with third party drivers, like
OmegaDrivers, also try
ATI's official drivers. On a mobile platform, use
DH Mobility Modder, as ATI does not officially provide drivers for all notebooks at this time.
7. Reboot one more time
8. Test your applications.
