X1800XT and Overdrive what I learned.

First of all ATItool does not work. It may seem to look like its working but its not. By using it your asking for BSOD and constant hangups and you will only force the card into dropping to 425/650.

There is as said many times a 3D and 2D diffrence in speed. What really happens is if the drivers detect the cards in windowed mode (no matter that apps are running in windows) it runs at 2D clock speeds.

The best way to check if your overclocking is working good is to run a benchmark a few times and look for obvious signs. The cards seem to be much more overclockable than any ATI card I have used. But the biggest hurdle on the XT is the cooler. To be honest it sucks big time. Its a cop out in all terms. Its loud, its really poor quality Alloy and to mix copper and aluminum together has been proven to be a poor choice time and time again. My wife hates the fan more than on my X850. On the X850 for some reason it never span fast unless I forced it to with ATI Tool. Now it spins up all the time because the thing is setup correctly and because if it didnt the GPU would die after a weeks useage. The GPU runs at 82+ which is indeed hot. Hotter than my duel core.

there is a special tool for overclocking the x1800xt. you cant use anything that is already out unless someone has coded for it already.

check out some other tools to check and see, but otherwise you will have to use the tool from ati.

82 won't kill the card will it?

X850 has a slow core clock compared to an X1800 and far fewer transistors so the amount of transistors has alot to do with it
