ATI Cards and NWN

Anyone have any data on what the best drivers, etc. are for ATI cards and NWN. Especially the 7200's which I currently have.

I would think that they would have some of their own to test these drivers on. Anyhow, I am hoping that they handle the OpenGL issues, especially the problems with multiple OpenGL windows.

NWN + 2.3+ Cats = broken

The fixed EXE is only for 8500 and up cards. Booo! So stick to older driver if NWN is your thing.

I'm playing NWN 1.27 (not the beta patch), with Catalyst 3.0 and I must say that this is the best the game has ever run. It doesn't crash, i runs faster then ever, and my cursor doesn't flicker anymore! Though I do have an 8500 so any problems your having might not apply to my video card.

Well, I have NWN and I can easily say that this game does not run well on my set-up. It definately bogs down in areas of this game, as well as any other graphically intense game. I have an 8500 w/64Mb, and I use 1024x768 @ 32BPP for all games. (120Hz refresh on a Gateway vx1120 21" monitor) I run WinXP and the latest 3.oa catalysts. My HD's are all running correctly (UDMA100/133) and they are defragged. What causes my slowdown? Is it the lack of ram on the vid card (64MB), or is it my system ram (PC2700 512MB), it surely shouldn't be my processor (P4 1.6A @ 2.133).. so any suggestions?

Wretch, if you think you should be getting more performance check if you have "fast writes" disabled. Having them enabled causes a MAJOR performance hit in NWN (at least on my setup it did). With fast writed disabled I now have the same performance at 1024x768 that I had with 800x600 and fast writes enabled.

I have a Radeon 9000 (non-pro) and now I only get slowdowns in "crowded" areas.

yeah, that's what I speak of.. my fastwrites are off. The slowdowns in crowded areas, can anyone tell me about a video card that doesn't slow down in those spots @ 1024x768?

My Hercules 9700 pro runs through the game like a knife through hot butter - provided you don't enable any kind of FSAA. Enabling that causes major slowdown - which is kinda odd as ever other game plays fine with it enabled!

I have the 7200/VE radeon card and whenever i start to try to play the game, it freezes up on me. The music is still playing, but nothing works, no movement or keyboard commands work, not even CTRL+ALT+DEL, I have to hit the reset button to clear it. The weird thing is all of the charcter creation works fine, but a few seconds after starting the actual gameplay, it just freezes up.

I tried changing all settings to low, but still have same problem.

System specs
Cat 3.0a
DX 9
XP Home
Athlon T-bird 850
512 MB PC-133
Gigabyte GA-7IXE-4 MB

No other problems with any other games.

Folks,

It's beginning to be VERY clear that you shouldn't use the newer Cats with older Radeons.

I think ATI should split the driver tree. I know they probably worked very hard to integrate it, but it's obviously not working out.
