Big Grin odd ...

Odd to say, but really i haven't had a single real problem with the OpenGL side of Catalyst 3.0, cept for UT2K3 won't load in opengl now... but it never worked right in opengl to begin with. Shocking?


I've found 1 map in UT2K3 that has black spots in D3D mode, but beyond that all my opengl games work fine.

Infact i had OpenGL broke in 2.5 whereas it's been a little happier now.

Althought one could say, If your drivers ain't broke, don't update em. Stick to your old pre-catalyst drivers if you can (oh i wish).

But unfortunatly i gotta use Catalyst with my UT2K3

At any rate, my point is, most problems i've heard about with the Catalyst's seem due to corrupted dll's maybe? (opengl32.dll) or packages including their unique ogl drivers and not using ATI's ogl drivers.

I maybe wrong, prolly am, but i'm happy with 3.0.

Try the uninstall guide

Both myself and a buddy had numerous problems with our 9700 Pro cards after installing the new drivers. I.E. lockups in games, OpenGL starting and stopping every five seconds, and various others. I finally decided to follow the unistall guide and it really helped alot. Both systems are now running like dreams. I could not believe how many old sets of drivers were hidden away in my registry.

If we aren't here to beta test these drivers for ATi, then who
would?

Plus, if we don't "complain" about something that's broken, ATi
would never know about it since many of these problems they've
never experienced on their in-house testing machines, or are
having trouble producing. PCs aren't like consoles, dear sir,
where they can just make something and have it work on every
system out there.

SPEC Viewperf 7.0 still has a problem running ugs-01.

The following is a review I posted to Rage3D, I am also know as Grog at Rage3d.

The following review includes Catalyst 2.5 testing with and without DirectX 9.0 as well as Catalyst 3.0 with DirectX 9.0.

System Information:

AK70-EC - Athlon @ 1Ghz - Performance Rating : PR1330 (estimated) - 768MB RAM
AGP - ATI 8500DV - RETAIL
PCI - Creative Live MP3+ sound card
PCI - Intel Ethernet PRO100
IBM Deskstar 75GXP 61.49GB 7200rpm ATA-100 HDD - DLTA-307060 (ULTRA DMA MODE 5)
IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30.74GB 7200rpm ATA-100 HDD - DLTA-307030 (ULTRA DMA MODE 5)
Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-106 (ULTRA DMA MODE 4)
CenDyne - DVR-104 (aka. Pioneer A04 DVD-RW) (ULTRA DMA MODE 2)
WinXP PRO (FULL VERSION)

Testing procedure:

Before I commit to the new Catalyst 2.5/3.0 drivers and the following testing procedure was used to verify the driver sets.

* Remove hard drives from system and install test drive.
* Install WinXP fresh in test drive
* Install neccesary board level drivers
* Install components under test. Microsoft SP1 then Catalyst 2.5
* Beat the hell out of the system.

A fresh install was done using WinXP PRO - Full.

Install Catalyst 2.5 components after WinXP fresh install.

1.) VIAHyperion4in1445v.exe = VIA 4.45 driver. - reboot
2.) WinXP SP1 was then installed.
3.) WDM - no reboot (tv-capture-wdm-6-13-10-6173v3.exe)
4.) Catalyst - no reboot (wxp-w2k-radeon-6-13-10-6218-efg.exe)
5.) Control Panel - reboot (control-panel-6-14-10-4000-efg.exe)
6.) NOK_INF.EXE <= Nokia monitor inf install from viewsonic
7.) MMC 7.6DVD - reboot (dvd-7-6.exe)
8.) MMC 7.7.0.1no DVD (latest posted at ATI) Reboot (MMC-7-7-0-1-noDVD.exe)
9.) Remote control 1.1 & installer (Receiver unplugged) - Reboot (remote-1-1.exe)
10.) Remote control update - Reboot (remote-wonder-1-2.exe)
11.) hydravision - reboot (hydravision-3-20-2020.exe) -> optional

Install Catalyst 2.5 with DirectX 9.0 components.
1.) After testing the Catalyst 2.5 setup above install DirectX 9.0 (dxwebsetup.exe).

Install Catalyst 3.0 components.

1.) Remove all ATI components (ADD/REMOVE).
2,) Remove C:\ATI folder.
3.) Reboot
4.) Catalyst - no reboot (wxp-w2k-radeon-7-81-021213a-006891E.exe)
5.) NOK_INF.EXE <= Nokia monitor inf install from viewsonic
6.) MMC 7.6DVD - reboot (dvd-7-6.exe)
7.) MMC 7.7.0.1no DVD (latest posted at ATI) Reboot (MMC-7-7-0-1-noDVD.exe)
8.) Remote control 1.1 & installer (Receiver unplugged) - Reboot (remote-1-1.exe)
9.) Remote control update - Reboot (remote-wonder-1-2.exe)

Problems:

I did not find any new problems with the Catalyst 2.5/3.0 driver set. But I did find a couple of old ones still there.


1.) Showing "display/properties/settings" causes the TV tuner to stop working. Reboot is required to fix problem. Since I use a

hot-key to switch between TV-OUT (S-VIDEO) this is not a problem. I have assigned TV-OUT as "CONTROL-ALT-0" and "CONTROL-ALT-1" for

TV-OUT ON and TV-OUT OFF. This works fine. Still, this is the first driver release I have seen with this problem.

2.) SPEC Viewperf 7.0 still has a problem running ugs-01.

Fixed issues (maybe):
1.) ATIMMC.EXE always exited corectly during all my testing.

I also tested WinDVD for those that care. Hardware enable tabs enabled. No problem. Personally I still perfer the ATI player. I am

ATI DirectX 9.0 Demo's

You may have guessed, they will not run with the 8500. Having DirectX 9.0 installed does not mean the hardware suppports the

required protocols. The 8500 as I see it has no advantage to using DirectX 9.0 right now.

Conclusion:

Although Catalyst 2.5 does seem stable I see no reason to commit to this version, sorry.
Catalyst 2.4 seems very good for the 8500DV right now.
I am really looking foward to testing MMC 8.1.

I had a somthing strange happen about two days after I installed cat 3.0 and DX9, BSOD when I clicked on a simple hyperlink, no flash or anything, Kmode exception, no driver listed. I rebooted and my icons were in a decreased color depth, 64bit I guess. Reboot again this time with a disk check, no erros on disk, but my desktop icons are restored, the ones in the system tray still aren't back to normal.

DX applications (games, TV veiwer) wouldn't run in full screen mode, so I did a dxdiag, got an error that all direct 3D functions wouldn't be available with netmeeting running, except it wasn't. I even checked in taskmanager. So I started and closed Netmeeting just to see if it would do anything, fixed the fullscreen buisness, but I haven't rebooted again to see if the systray icons are restored.

Seems more like a problem with Microsoft/DX9, but I thought I'ld post anyway.

no problems really with games, but i agree with most of the people that talk about the SMARTGART. Why is this such a problem. in basic mode it seems ok but in advanced the fast writes are off. when you retest them it switches it back on but you need to restart then it goes back off again. I think also that everyone needs to make sure they know how to uninstall the drivers properly before whinging. the only game i cant get to work is aquanox, but i think it may be another problem cos all my other games work, if anyone knows any tweaks for this please leave a message

hey evergreen,

it was a nice idea, but it does not work. operation flashpoint does not run. i can not even see the main menu. in the moment i get there the complete pc makes a reset. but its only in that game. i do not understand this.

is it possible that to many pci cards are sharing one irq ? but what i do not understand is why only one game does not work ! all other games (open gl or direct 3d) --> age of empires 2, civilization 3, half-life 1.1.1.0 with cs 1.5 and dod 3.1, battlefield 1942, industrygiant 2, mohaa spearhead and stronghold + stronghold crusader ! all these games are running without any problems !!!
i have also tested other older direct 3d games like unreal tournament, no problems !

perhaps you or some other guys have an idea on this problem.

Do you honestly think that the catalyst crew reads these forums. If they want to know, contact them directly. Bitching about the problem here is not going to solve the problem any faster. Oh, what I mean is that nobody is stopping you guys from not using the 3.0s, that's my point.

people who participate in some discussions.

I am glad that ATI looks at the threads here and at Rage3D.

Overall I consider the Catalyst drivers to be first rate. I did pass on commiting to the Catalyst 2.5 and 3.0 drivers for the 8500DV. But my reason was really only based on the fact the Catalyst 2.4 drivers were fine for now. I did test them with a spare test drive and fresh installs as I outlined in a prior message. But I did want to say that any of the Catalyst drivers are clear winners in my book.

The problem with SPEC Viewperf 7.0 ugs-01 is in all the Catalyst drivers I tested. But have yet to see a OPENGL issue outside of this benchmark with the 8500DV.

THe main issue that ive had and ive posted about this over at rage3d as well is the low framerate drop we seem to get with the 9700. While you cruise along at 100 fps the card bottoms for some strange reason to about 10 or 20.
It causes a pause if not a stutter in the game and makes it hard to play. The game in this case is ut2k3.
My hardware is
a7v8x
512 corsair 3200
9700 pro by ati
Xp 2100
THats about enough of a system to play this game on I would think.
Please report this to anyone that will listen to you. IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED SOON IF POSSIBLE.

Cool! Cat 3.0 issues & devil021175's problem

Hey devil021175,
It was worth a try. I believe that my problems were related to my flat panel display & XP. 98SE ran everything fine, I FINALLY upgraded to XP and my games would reboot my PC about 80% of the time during the opening screens.
Have you checked for any Operation Flashpoint patches?

Cat 3.0 issues

MadOnion's PCMark2002 reboots my PC during the video test after I changed all of my OpenGL & D3D settings to 'Performance' from the defaults.

??? ofp patches and cat 3.0 problems

hello evergreen,

operation flashpoint version is 1.91 (last patch) and was running until last sunday without any problems with cat 2.5 !
in the meantime i have also changed some irq´s in the bios but without any effect. ofp is the only game that makes problems !

but thanks for your ideas. you are right, it was worth a try !

i will now try some other possible reasons for that problems.
but i would also test any other idea that could fix the problem.

hey guys,

i have terminated my problems with operation flashpoint. it looks like some unoffical addons do not work with the cat3 driver ! if i am not using these addons ofp is running ! but i hope this is not the end of the story because these are many addons and they are very usefull ! so i hope that ati may find a clue on this problem maybe in the next released driver !

It would also be helpful if you could post which add-ons you
were using (or which ones have been causing errors for you)
so that they can check it out and test..

this is a good idea ! it is a long list of addons that are not running at this time with the cat3 driver but here are they :

tjp mh47 / mh60
all east troops and all weapons by uce (uce weapons pack 1.25)

if i was using only one of these addons ofp resets the complete machine.

Direct X problem?

I forgot to post one other strange issue I noticed with the officialy 3.0 Catalyst version... is when I went into dxdiag besides the fact that my AGP texture acceleration was blanked out and I couldn't access it, for the Direct version it said I was using 8... when I just installed 9 earlier. Once I removed the driver and went to another then it said I was using 9 (or higher) strange...

Another game update:

The game "Post-Mortem" seems to freeze after a few minutes
of playing. Reading the text file that comes with the game,
they say that it's a problem they've had with the Rage 128,
but they only recommend to use the latest drivers.
