Catalyst and Sygate firewall problem
Hi all. Did a search but couldn't find any info on this...
So I downloaded and installed Catalyst 5.6 when it was released. Everything went ok, but after Windows restarted, my Sygate Personal Firewall did not start up. Even if I go into the Start menu and start the application, it doesn't actually load until about 2-3 minutes later. So I did a system restore and went back to using Cat 5.1 (don't laugh, I'm too lazy to update it every month ) until I had some time to try and fix the problem.
So in the last few days I've tried using DriverCleaner before installing the new drivers, uninstalling and re-intalling Sygate. I tried Cat 5.6 with the CCC and with the old control panel, and also Cat 5.5 (old control). No matter what I do, I still have the same problem - Sygate doesn't load until a few minutes later.
Does anybody have any ideas?
Thanks.

I run Sygate and have Cat 5.6's installed, and no problem, either during installation or afterwards. In fact, I have ran Sygate for about a year now, and have used the Cat's and Omega's during that time with no problems like you describe.

I don't see how that would help...
But I guess if it comes down to having to do a reformat then I will.

if the partition is badly fragmented then access will be slow.
also do you have many programs set to execute during startup?
and how about chipset drivers?

Nah look, the thing is, it works fine when I have Cat 5.1 installed. It's only when I try Cat 5.5/5.6 that it suddenly refuses to load until a few minutes later. Anyway my primary drive was just recently defragged.
Chipset drivers...my mobo is an i848P chipset (ie. not VIA ) so I never bothered with chipset drivers. Is it worth a try?

One thing to try would be to disable the Sygate Firewall while your installing the drivers, then re-enable it after you've rebooted. Also, be sure that Windows Firewall is actually disabled.
BTW, are you using ATIs Multimedia Center? If so, don't forget to update that as well.
Lastly, it may not be a problem with the ATI drivers themselves, but rather that Windows has reshuffled the order in which the startup programs load. It may be that another piece of software, possibley your antivirus software, or messenger programs, is loading before the Sygate Firewall that wasn't before, and this is what's causing the delay in the startup. Double check the list of apps starting up (start, run, msconfig, startup tab), and if you can, uncheck ones you can live without for a bit while you test out which app is actually causing the delay. Ones to uncheck would be mouse software, messengers, optimizers, popup stoppers, and others. If you disconnect your ethernet cable you can disable your antivirus software temporarily to see if it might be the cause too.

Sygate Personal Firewall is a free program. I didn't notice above, but did you try uninstalling it and downloading it again?

Wow no chipset drivers.
Do this
1. Chipset Drivers
2. Re-install DirectX
3. Drivers
You really shouldn't have to re-install your drivers but it wouldn't hurt.

Well presumably if he had no chipset drivers he'd get crappy, sucky, bad AGP performance, and terrible IDE performance too, right? Thats what chipset drivers are for aren't they?

Yes, but he says he's never installed them. So windows could of defaulted to it's own drivers, which Intel drivers in windows are normally better than VIA or Nvidia. I refuse to install the IDE drivers for my board since they suck.

Tried all your suggestions. Still no go. Thanks anyway
Will try the chipset drivers now and see if it solves the problem.

Funny thing is VIA SATA drivers are absolutely killer. Stable and they offer good performance for me. But the AGP drivers suck....thats the only real complaint I Have

Make sure you have the windows firewall disabled on your internet connection
if you use 3rd party apps like sygate.
goto windowsupdate and update any available,
goto c:\windows\temp\ delete all files
goto C:\windows\prefetch\ delete all files
goto start run type "sfc /purgecache"
defragment the hard drive
just cleans out some cobwebs and junk windows builds up...
I downloaded the demo i'll take a look...
EDIT:
No problems here but if you blocked a process that needs to connect out
of course could always result in strange issues

Well...long story short, I've made it worse with all the uninstalling/resinstalling/restoring so I'm backing up and getting ready for a reformat.
I really appreciate the attempts to help though.

You might also try Zone Alarm basic, it works very well and doesn't have these issues

Displaying the information is pretty much irrelevant so long as you're protected, no? In that respect Zone Alarm does log things very well and also protects it. Even if you don't get *ALL* the information, it gives you enough for a big head start
