GTA: San Andreas servere problem
I just installed San Andreas about an hour ago and installed the new Catalyst 5.6 drivers and the game crashed twice with the SMartgart crap and told me my video card stopped responding.
I am running
2.0 Ghz Pentium4
512DDR ram
Original ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb
What should I do?

Roll-back the drivers for a start and see if the problem persists.

do you get this error?
The computer have shut down due to a problem with DRIVER_IQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"
can you get into it, if it flickers when you enter it, then goes to windows try this
"Left click on the San Andreas Icon, go to compartibility tab and put a tick on the last two choices "disable visual themes" "turn off advances text services".
Those who used the other solution should disable the windows2000 option (uncheck that option)"

Alright with the 5.6 Drivers, when I started San Andreas it would show the Nvidia and Creative EAX intro for like half a second. I installed back to 5.5 and now everything is normal. The intros display normally and the game doesn't crash anymore. With the 5.6, when it crashed, Smartgart prepared an error report to be sent to ATI. ANyways I have the 5.5 and everything is cool

I get VPU recover messages here and there too. Seems like "The Way It's Meant To Be Played" is kicking in all the time . Anyway, just don't panic when it happens - most of the time you would not even lose anything, since the driver will reload itself and restore the game in a minute or tow.
5.6 CCC drivers here.

You don't honestly suspect they've sold out to nVidia and crashes ATI cards

im playing fine.. omega 5.4
no vpu recover.. i dont ever use that crap..
4.12 has corrupt heat haze effects.. never noticed it.. but thats what the readme says.. so i went with 5.4 from omega.. smooth as butter.. css run just as good on 5.4.. but the strange thing is i need to turn the AI to low to achieve the same css stress test as omega 4.12..
on 5.x i get stuttery gameplay in css if i have my ai set to high.. ati tray tools using

Well I wasnt experiencing crashes however I saw quite a bit of texture flickering and stuttering in certain areas. On a 6800 there are no issues. However considering Rockstar didnt work with ATI developing the game im not surprised.

This doesn't bode well for a studio who has had such great success (GTA III and Vice City)...poor job overall if so many people have these problems. Has ATI had any input on the situation?

With my R9800pro 128MB I had some game crashes while playing with AntiAliasing forced on in the driver, but so far only then. For best performance/quality on my system I run with in-game AntiAliasing setting 3, in-game effects detail low, driver AnisotropicFiltering 8xQuality, driver texture preference Quality (reduces texture aliasing as compared to High Quality). 1024x768, AthlonXP 2700+. Catalyst 5.6. Frame limiter is off and the framerate stays very playable, as in better than with frame limiter on and no serious slowdowns or stuttering. The biggest factor is settling for low effects detail as the extra lighting and shadows on the above levels kills performance in some situations.

after the nvidia logo it plays two mpegs so maybe its a codec problem. you can try changing the two mpegs in the movies folder to blank files.
edit: if anyone hasnt heard its pretty easy to increase the draw distance
open gtasa\data\timecyc.dat look for 400 100 (400 is default draw, 1600 looks great with no big fps hit)
then open gtasa\stream.ini change vehicles to a thousand or so (makes them appear futher off in the distance)
oh and naked girl gangs

can you be a bit more specific about the draw distance thing... should all 400 values be changed to 1600?

I thought an ansiotropic filter would help the draw distance...does this work with Vice City? It annoys me greatly!
