Need help -- system fonts shrink after 9600 driver upgrade
I'm upgrading a Radeon 9600 to modded Catalyst drivers to allow 1600x1200 viewing with a Thinkpad T42. Original IBM Radeon drivers do not allow external DVI at 1600x1200 resolution. I am having numerous problems, but I'll try to fix them by reading old posts.
Current issue: With the identical settings as before, my system fonts (and other system related items) are noticably smaller than prior to the upgrade. I have a 1400x1050 LCD so I have slightly enlarged everthing to improve readablity (sorry, old eyes). System DPI set to 129%. Most items in Windows appearance tab increased slightly (i.e. Fonts to 9 vs 8). Strangely, fonts in Firefox appear unchanged.
I assume I can crank up the DPI setting if necessary -- but before I make all the changes, I'm wondering whether there is a more basic solution to the change in apparent resolution.
Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the reply. As you point out, I can control FF font size with the FF software. My issue is with the system fonts (both in the windows elements and in programs that use system settings). The font (and in some instances icon) sizes appear a good 20% smaller now that I've upgraded my drivers despite identical settings as pre-upgrade.
I'd welcome any thoughts.

if i understand right you have installed the newer drivers with the aim of using a higher resolution, and with the higher resolution fonts/icons are smaller or are you on the same resolution as before?

Sorry for being less than perfectly clear. I'll try to clarify:
My issue is with the 14" LCD screen of my IBM t42 which runs natively at 1400x1050. When I mention the change in font size, I am referring to that screen run at the 1400 resolution. The original Radeon driver set (supplied by IBM) works fine with the laptop LCD. When I got the T42 last Fall, I made adjustments (particluarly the 129% DPI adjustment) to theA original driver set-up to improve readability on the laptop LCD. Yesterday, after installing the new modded drivers, the laptop screen is showing smaller type despite identical settings as before.
FYI, the reason I upgraded the drivers is that the IBM set does not support external DVI over the 1400 resolution. I just purchased a Samsung 213T which is native at 1600x1200 and needed the upgraded and modded driver to run it at the higher setting. BTW, the Samsung works great at 1600 with the upgraded driver.
Sorry for the long response, Hope it helps. Please feel free to ask additional questions.
Thanks.

long responses are great, as long as it's on topic or relevant
as far as i know changing your video drivers wont change your font sizes
you can try using your old drivers then getting powerstrip or refreshlock to add a custom res

Thanks again for the response.
Since there was a size change when there should not have been one, I guess I'll move to some form of remedial action to adjust the font sizes with the upgraded drivers.
Still left with a mystery why the size changed.

your guess is as good as any.
searching google did seem to find a fair amount of people also complaining of small fonts and IBM t42 screens, so maybe the lcds in them arent good looking at any res but the default?
