exclamation ATI: Steam Updates Screwing Up Source Games

Please refer to the following link, noting my posts on what problems I'm having and what I found to be the cure. Do not want to be re-installing drivers every time Steam Updates. Don't know if this is a driver issue or a Steam issue but any help would be apprieciated. Thanks, Poppi

i have never seen a card x800xt pe or 6800 ultra get 210+ in the stress test.the stress test is official messed up for everybody i have talked too and my numbers also fluctuate drastically but drastic to me is 20 or 30 fps not 100 plus.do you have the errors at the beginning of the test on the first three models??if you replace the files needed for the test it cuts down on the fluctuation.good luck

Just wanted to update anyone from ATI reading this. The thread was moved from Valve's General Steam forum to their CSS forum. Many people including me are having problems with all Source games after Steam updates.

From what I have read this is a Steam problem not ATI. My CS:S still works fine on my 9800XT so it must be some other hardware/software conflict causing people problems.

It's steam and far as I’m concerned valves fault. It's why so many people hate steam.
Just ask all the CS people with problems after the 1.5 to 1.6 update which stripped out
a big chunk of net code. Everyone wined of lower FPS and drops some of which has been
partially addressed by them way after the fact (years later).

Valve has seriously screwed up their net code with the behind the scenes beta testing of
VAC/VAC2. Everyone’s having issue weather their realizing it or not. It’s not brand by
game specific.Far as I’m concerned if you have ping over 50 and have more then 6
players on a sever you going to see what I’m talking about. Especially when you shoot
someone 30 times and 1, 2 or none of you shots register. It’s all net code. Your FPS again
is majorly affected by net code and you connection.

Try loading up a game as you own sever and check your fps vs. when you playing on the
same map on you favorite sever. You notice a massive gain when hosting you own vs.
remotely that all net code! Valve needs to stop testing and coding their game over a zero
ping “internal” network! Far as I’m concerned if you play CS over a LAN you’ll be far better
pleased.

It's partailly coverd in a FPS artical i'm working on that will show up some time soon

Yeah but the problem with me is ALL my Source games are affected. Even my SP games until I re-install the CAT drivers and that needs to include driver cleaner. I really don't believe it's a CAT. problem, I just wanted ATI to know so they can tell Valve to quit farting around with a stable set up.

The last time Steam updated and this problem happened, I tried to re-install the 5.4s without using driver cleaner and it did not cure the problem. Makes me think the Steam update is corrupting one of my ATI files that driver cleaner gets rid of. Anyway, thanks for all of your input everyone. Hope this gets cured soon.
