A Bug With The New ATI Drivers, Please Help!

Ok, I unistalled the 4.12s Omega, and ran driver cleaner and deleted all registry settings ect. I then installed the 5.4 ATI cats, well now when I reboot,, my video card defaults to 4 bit ect. But then when I uninstall them and go back to windows, its running in 32 bit..whats the fix!? btw, I have a x800 Pro Sapphire. I didnt have this problem with 4.12. It says the 5.4s arent even installed after I reboot!

there has to have been something left behind.i am x800pro and no probs installing after i removed omegas.make sure you run drivercleaner in safe mode and also make sure to run cab cleaner just incase.make sure you delete the folder also if the uninstaller of omegas didnt do it.you should also create a small sig in your profile, that way we know what ya got going on.later

Before you make broad sweeping statments like that you should have confirmation from other Sapphire X800Pro users to back you up. If there was a massive problem using 5.4 cats with a sapphire X800 pro I'm sure there would be a few more posts by now. Perhaps you should edit you post and say "Ok, its official, the 5.4s DO NOT work with MY sapphire x800 Pro in MY current setup." At the very least you could try a fresh install of windows to see if you have anything else on your system that is causing a problem.

WHY would I, INSTALL windows again, when I just got done reformatting my PC the other day? I have Windows SP2. I reverted back to ATI's 5.3 stock and they work perfectly now. But the 5.4 do NOT, do NOT! work with MY Sapphire x800 Pro 256 MB. Not everyone has an x800 Pro Sapphire. But it just doesnt work. If there is a fix, then tell me please.

BTW, dont get mad at me, I am right about this issue. go figure

I have the exact same problem with my SAPPHIRE X800 XT Platinum Editon.

I deinstalled CAT 5.3, used drivecleaner pro, installed the new one and Windows in 4-Bit Colordebth (it looks a little bit like in the old win 3.11 day). The control panel shows a message like "not ATI driver found or drive corrupt" something like that.

I don't know what is wrong ...

I have asked my contact at Sapphire to try it out and see if he can reproduce this. This is not a problem that we (ATI) has heard with CAT 5.3 or 5.4 or any other CATALYST for that matter

Thank you for your help.

It's my first problem with a catalyst, too. And I installed every new release for 2 years now ...

Exact same issue here. Running a Sapphire 256MB ATI Radeon X800 Pro, Windows loads at 640x480 4 bit colour and stays that way no matter what you change with the Cat 5.4 drivers. 3 out of 3 users so far using a Sapphire...

Also running a P4 2.6Ghz on an Asus P4S8X-X motherboard and a 17" Samsung 793MB Magicbright monitor, if there's any constant in that with anyone else's rig.

Been running Cats since the 9700 Pro came out, I've never seen anything quite so mad! That KOTOR fix was so close, too...

3 out of 3. That's interesting. Good idea to take a look our system configurations. I have a 3.0 Ghz P4 (Dell Dimension 8300).

But I think the bug is in the driver. Like Stuminus3 wrote I installed nearly 20 Catalyst drivers, too. No problems for me in the past. But now ...

I wrote a "ticket" at the ATI support site. Maybe it's a good idea when all other users with these problem will write a ticket too.

I am very dissapointed because ATI fixed the KOTOR 2 bug with low framerates in the Catalyst 5.4. Now I'll have to wait 'till May to play KOTOR 2 again.

Wait, I see you mentioned your monitor. I have a IIyama Vision Master Pro 450. Is it possible that this problem has something to do with displays???

Thats not really possible, but nothings impossible (in a way). But I dont think it's our displays, I got a new monitor yesterday (the Samsung 990DF 19'). And I thought it was my monitor, but it wasnt, its the drivers for sure, ive tested and tested and tested, it IS the drivers

Ah, you tested the drivers with another display. Good idea. But what about the fact that we all have Sapphire cards. I am so confused about these new drivers, I even stopped playing Splinter Cell 3 that I bought today .

Have you tried to install the drivers the old fashioned way?

Go to the device manager,
double click the device, update drivers, let windows search but tell it to search:
C:\ATI\SUPPORT\wxp-w2k-catalyst-CCC-8-121-050322a-022141C-english\Driver\2KXP_INF

Let windows install the driver that way. You will have to do it twice
once for the primary and once for the secondary display

Then go in C:\ATI\SUPPORT\wxp-w2k-catalyst-CCC-8-121-050322a-022141C-english\
find and install the classic control panel or CCC from thier folder after it’s done, reboot.

I've now tried just about everything... the old fashioned way doesn't work either. Changing monitor hasn't made a difference... I've tried a seperate 15" and a 19" and I'm still stuck at 640x480 4-bit colour. I've also bit the bullet and reinstalled Windows - same problem on the freshest, cleanest install I can. Motherboard and AGP drivers are completely up to date. Still no luck. Yet an installation of 5.3 works perfectly.

I'll open a ticket at ati.com for this one... I'm wondering if it's worth hassling Sapphire on the issue, too.

RE: The KotOR2 issue, I think it's possible to drop the OpenGL file from the 5.4 package in the KotOR directory to take advantage of the benefits of 5.4 without actually installing it, I have to re-install one of the KotOR games to double-check that though.

A little good news, at least.. the KotOR2 tip I posted appears to work, the game's diagnostic tool certainly reports the right driver version and after loading a couple of old saves it seems the game runs more like it should. It's slightly annoying to only be able to play with the 5.4 OpenGL file while everything else is still using 5.3, though.

Not trying to be funny, but can you check for sure that you're running 5.4 and not 5.3? There was an issue with the links on the front page of the ATI site where the 5.4 links actually gave you the files for 5.3, I was running 5.3 for a whole day thinking it was 5.4.

EDIT: Some people are having the same issue here at the Rage3D Catalyst forum.

im using wxp-w2k-8-121-050322a-022141C, but i take the newer files from cats 5.4 and add them to omegas (as well as inf changes).

edit: just wanted to add i have yet to notice this problem on win x64 cat 5.4

That's exactly what I thought before I installed the 5.4 for the first time. ATI answered my ticket with a similar argument. But I know now that it is not user-related (I don't do anything wrong) or my system. I installed Windows XP on a new harddrive that I bought this week. I disabled my "real" system harddrive in the bios. But even with a fresh installed Windows XP these drivers won't work with my Sapphire card.

That's real good news for me. I try your tip in a few hours. Thank you very much.
