FSAA doesnot work in quake3 widescreen fullscreen with my 9600
After the whole day testing, installing and uninstalling all kinds of display drivers and something like that, finally, i gave up.
Here is the thing:
im working with my q3 video, and i have to work under widescreen 856*480, fullscreen in q3a. My vid card is ati9600, and with omega driver 2.6.05a, using fsaa 6XT3. i found fsaa doesnot work at all at fullscreen 856*480 resolution in q3a. Actually, i tried all the fsaa options, but they are off duty all the same.
However it works at windowed mode, 856*480 res ...and i tried other different resolutions with fullscreen and windowed, they all worked well. Then i tried other display drivers as i said at the beginning, NGO, DNA, official, etc... all the same..
Then i got A conclusion, that means that the fullscreen antialiasing function of ATI9600 doesnot work at fullscreen 856*480 resolution in quake3arena...
Here come the ss:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/15433688@N00/
click them then u can enlarge them by the amplifier above
Sry for my poor english, but i believe u guys could understand what im saying.
Any help or tips at all would be appreciated ^^

OK... i so far can ONLY comfirm this.... even on my 9800 pro.. doesn't work.. my 9600XT also produces the same thing...
Here's the kicker.... when trying to run 856x480 full screen.. it doesn't go FULL screen... it basically just removes the "window around the display"... but fits it in the top left corner with the rest of the desktop displaying.... hit window mode and it just ads the 2-4 pixel window border around it....
Anti Ailaising works in the windowed mode.. were as it's plainly clear it doesn't in the saposed "full screen" mode...
Course, 856x480 isn't a standard resolution... but it should work...
Tried it on the following drivers:
CAT 5.3's
CAT 5.1's
i doubt running any older drivers would solve the problem....
But considering that quake 3 is the engine itself.... there would be problems with every game running on that engine....
mchotdog... i'll see what i can come up with for a fix asap..... but i can't guarantee anything.. i'm sure it's a limitation in the OPENGL driver itself....

wow~
THX a lot~dude~
My whole project is stuck over this, ill try CAT 5.1/5.3, and see what they can do.
Or maybe i could email John Carmark for help ??
wait.....
Maybe it's not a limitation in the OPENGL driver..
See, this is a screenshot at fullscreen 856*480 resolution with NV GF4800SE, and driver 41.56. FSAA 4X
http://www.flickr.com/photos/15433688@N00/7292578/
it works well..

I just tried it and it works fine, to get it to work you have to add the resolution to the display drivers AND to Quake 3 cfg file
856x480 doesnt appear in powerstrip the closest is 848 x 480 so I added that one so I didnt have to work out the timings
Heres a pic of Q3 running at those resolutions and with AA working
If you dont get it right then everything runs at the wrong res and at 16bit so AA doesnt work

Yes it was full screen
These were the settings I used in the cfg file
seta r_customaspect "1"
seta r_customheight "480"
seta r_customwidth "848"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_mode "-1"

unfortuneatly.... i don't have a tool to simply modify the resolutions.... imo, shouldn't NEED to...
I think various HDTV resolution should now be included by default in all video drivers.. i know plenty of people setting up thier computer on them

List all possible modes including panning modes in the CCC gives you quite a few more resolutions to pick from than normal but doesnt include them all
Powerstrip is shareware so you can use it for free if you dont mind the 5 second countdown each time you want to use it
If you want extra resolutions then request them via the ATI feedback form

lol!!!
i made it!
After uninstalling all, i installed the unian catalyst v1.1.51 and powerstrip, then as Spyre said, it works.
BUT its with default cfg, not my special cfg for ultra-high quality, so there must be something wrong with my cfg, i changed many cvars, but i donno which 1 could be the troublemaker?
Any tips?
BTW: u guys names, Judas and Spyre, will show up on the ending credits for special thanks=)

I seem to have a similar problem. FSAA doesnt work in fullscreen in quake3 on a resolution higher than 800x600. it works fine in windowed mode at any resolution, and lower fullscreen resolutions like 800x600 and below but not in anything higher than that. I have a 9600 and I've tried many cats from 4.0 and up but nothing seems to fix the problem. Also this happens only in quake 3 and not in any other quake 3 engine games

NO! dude~
i can tell u that, i can run q3 at fullscreen 1024*768 or higher with FSAA, yeah, it works.
i believe that there must be something wrong with your driver or display settings or cfg, etc
i use driver unian catalyst v1.1.51 with max FSAA and max AF
It's so weird...
This time, i didnot change desktop to 856*480 resolution, its at 1024*768, but when i entered q3 at fullscreen 856*480 res, FSAA works!!!
I dunno why, but anyway it works, that's enough, that's fine.
I gotta modify my cfg...

slightly edited versions of the regular catalyst drivers also bundled with extra utils and tweaks that you dont get in the ATI version
Another edited set are the Omega tweaked drivers which you will hear a lot about on this forum
Notice this thread a few posts down
UNIAN 1.1.53 5.3 cat based are OUT and they rock

Just tried it and all my screenshot TGA files are fine none of them are blank and thats with 4xAA and 16xAF (using standard Q3 cfg file)
If you want any more help you will have to post your CFG file and settings used etc
