What is AGP memory and why is it always at 55mb?

I know what aperature is and page file and just bout everything else but when i check Sisoft Sandra or 3dmark2001 i see a column called agp memory and far as I know its always at 55mb. Is there a way to change this value? It seems an odd number considering i have 256mb ram and 128 on the radeon.

I have radeon 8500le with 128mb aperature in bios.

Sorry if post is in wrong thread but couldnt find one more suited.

I have 64 MB one and it is still 55MB. Weird.

I thought it is because 9 MB are used for 2D, but now I think it is not that way.
