you should split the money down the middle and get a say a 1.8 cpu/mobo and an $86 r8500 from newegg.....

Default Post What kind of mobo you got?

If it's Tulatin compatible, I'd recomend the 1.4Ghz Celery for cheap and then a AIW9500 when they come out.

I agree with Shuki, if you only upgrade either your vid card or your processor you won't be using it to it's full capacity. You'll still be bottlenecked by the slower component. If you've got your heart absolutely set on upgrading either one or the other though, I'd upgrade the video card.

Installing a AIW9700 on a P3-750 would only disappoint you.
The thing is today's videocard are surely powerful but pretty useless when the cpu is not up to speed.
In a way is a bit of a rip off.

If your motherboard supports tualatin (we can find out for you, just give us details) follow DigitalWanderer suggestion.

My 2c, wait a couple of weeks to see what hyperthreading brings on things like compressing videos.
If it's really beneficial go for a P4 3Ghz (but only when it drops in price) with the fastest memory you can get.
You might be surprised to see what your old radeon can do with a powerful processor.

Default Post One more thing...

...is I'd SERIOUSLY hold off buying a new viddy cards for at least a week! All the announcements coming up from Comdex are bound to affect the prices, and the only way they'll go is down.

Also, when you hear the word "celeron" when we're talking about "tulatin celeron"s make sure you know the difference before you discount the notion out of hand. A tulatin celeron is much more (if not better!) off a PIII of equivalent clock speed, so you're talking about more than doubling your processing power. I've found my 1.4@1.736 to be more than enough CPU for any games I happen to throw at it, it even ran the Doom Alpha half-way decently.
