Default Post Grrrr... WTF is going on with my games?

K. I have a 9700 Pro (1.4TBird, 512mb DDR, XP pro, 6193 Drivers) and after much annoyance I got it running rock solid. It has been running like dream for a couple of days now.

Today, I bough IL-2 Sturmovik and UT2003. Installed them both. Played them for a bit, and went to watch the teevee. Came back an hour or so later, computer still on and everything seemingly fine.

Cranked up UT2003 only to be presented with these mad and crazy... things.... flashing on the screen:

Crazy Corruption Pic 1 and Crazy Corruption Pic 2 . I basically just hit the screen capture button a couple of times and these were a couple of the things I got.

When I checked NOLF2 I had the exact same thing thing happen. Lurid random shapes and textures flashing wildly all over the screen.

However, Sturmovik was fine. Then I noticed it was running in OpenGL. Tried it in Direct X... same problem.

I rolled my system back to a previous restore point ansd reinstalled both games. NOLF2, UT2003 and Sturmovik once again run without error.

WTF? Anyone any idea what could have happened here? I'm stumped but it seems to point to a DX problem.

Yeah, pictures look like you overclocked the chip or memory too much.

Too high memory timings - same thing happened to me when I flashed my previous Manli 8500LE with Hercules FDX 8500LE bios.
Which drivers?

Well I just checked and my memory settings are just default 324/310.

Whats weird is that it only does it in Direct X games, and even then very rarely. The fix is even more strange... I just roll back to the last system restore so I'm guessing some Driver files or something are screwy.

I'm using the 6193 drivers, WinXP Pro, 430W PSU, 4x 80mm case fans, and with no overclocking at all.

I have also discovered the same effect can be achieved by using Motherboard Monitor 5. If it is installed games will do it automatically. Without it, no problems. Overall my system is about 99% solid apart from the occasional glitch like that, which alarmed me more due to the fact my computer had been sitting idle after a couple of hours gaming before doing this.

I was thinking my Gigabyte board might be something to do with it. It's an oldish Gigabyte GA-7DX with the F5 BIOS (I cant get it to flash to F7) and I was wondering whether the AMD-761 north bridge and VIA 686B south bridge might be the problem in terms of potential incompat chipset issues? I dunno... shooting in the dark here. All in all a bit weird.

I get a similar problem if I push my memory settings to high, but as you say you arent overclocking I would feel its bad memory or extremely high case temps.

my recommendation is to back your important files up, reformat, install a fresh driver set (cats 6194) to ensure its nothing else causing the problem, test everything on default, nature test 3dmark2001SE, if problems persist then RMA the card.
