If I were to mod these drivers, would the CCC work on the laptop?

Can you detail your installation procedure please? are you using .net 1.1 or 2? did you deinstall CP and/or an older CCC if you had one installed? more information on your setup and installation would help.

It's clear to me that I can choose between CP and CCC for now.
But I don't know how long ATI will provide us with both the CP and CCC.
ATI said they will stop adding new features to CP, and future drivers won't be compatible with the latest CP, so everyone will be forced to use CCC (or the fantastic Omega Drivers).

Maybe we'll get something like CCCL - Catalyst Control Panel Lite

/edit:

Look at the post above mine and you'll know one reason why I stick with CP.

I installed them just using the normal CP and I also came across this little problem:

It doesn't bother me or anything like that since in the ATi CP it says 5.1. I just posted in case someone else posts about it. I like the drivers and haven't encoutered any problems so far in FarCry, HL2, CS:S, Doom 3 and Riddick. I have yet to try Rome Total War to see if the game is still buggy as always. Also I installed the normal CP since the CCC just takes uses too much resources IMO and I hate that. Anyway thanks for the driver release!!!

ATI tool probably just has a built in database of translations for the actual driver numbers, trouble is unless you have an up to date database anything newer than the latest driver info the list will be an unknown driver (hence the + as if the driver is unknow it will most likely be newer). Its all a bit 'here be dragons' if you like.

It seems both the Reduced DVI and Alternate DVI options default to enabled now in the Catalyst 5.1's. Should I uncheck these options if I'm not having any trouble? Who would and when are you supposed to use these options? I have a DVI flat panel and I never fully understood these options and what I should be looking for to see if they should be enabled or not.

My understanding is that you should only enable them if you have problems

Reduced DVI lowers the refreshrate but increases the compatability so that higher resolutions can be used on certain TFT's

Alternate DVI is again for compatability reasons as some models of TFT's dont like the standard way of being polled

5.1 so far more stable than 4.12 (VPU recovers actually work now!), though a little slower, noticeably so in HL2 at least on my rig (the german review haven't tested 5.1 in HL2 because their demo won't run on 5.1). Went back and reread the comment about the featureless CP, well, I kinda agree, miss my AI and what not.

Now we wait for omega's tweaks (maybe he should just make a patch for the official cats instead would be more convenient since we all have official 5.1 installed unless they release betas).

my rivatuner says 4.12+ also

seriously, i never had problems with drivers ever with ATI cards
They've all worked for me, maybe a few fps differences but doesn't hurt me.

but with nvidia, that's another story.

and now i get a "machine debugger" error for CLI.Exe everytime i reboot ... or try to enter the catalyst Control Center

and the worst part is I'm gonna uninstall and reinstall the drivers 5 or 6 times tonight and at some point everything will be fixed .....

why can't people get drivers right the first time u know .... some non-techies will install the latest drivers, get error messages and format

Just installed the Cat5.1, which is not "version" 5.1, but in fact for the year 200"5", "1"/1st release of the year.

My only complaint is that the driver is dated Nov.30, 2004 ... so i guess we might get some new driver after March break? maybe? And I don't know if it is a good thing or bad thing ... the "admitted" known issues outnumber the solved ones by the biggest margin yet ... haha

@ Hundredswords

Obviously you dont understand how driver writing works

The drivers are written, internally and externally tested and then sent for certification with Microsoft

In the meantime new ones are written and the cycle starts again

Of course the drivers compile date is older since they were written a while ago and dont get released til the testing is done

km52, if you dont like the fact that ATI will NOT update the old control panel, thats to bad... its been discussed before, if you dont like it, use the old one... if you want to use the new features, you will have to wait for a tool to be made to use them, and it just so happens that their are a few out for the current additions.
ati tray tool is one,
radlinker is annother, and of course you can use omega drivers which uses radlinker as its control panel... if your so inclined to... you can do the tweeks yourself in the registry, OR change the inf files before installing the drivers :P

nothing said will change the way this new CCC is absolute... its going to be here, and it can only get better, so support it and give feedback, thats what its here for, to improve it.

A standard setup after deinstalling omega 2597a with ATITraytool installed too.
.net should be 1.2 with windows auto updates and that's all. I don't need to say that my system worked fine untill i try this new CCC set... now i have the 5.1 with CP and no more problem

:(

I'm very defeated. Cat 5.1 still doesn't work with my sapphire radeon 9600xt 256mb. Cats 4.6-4.12 also don't work. I've writing about this problem here:
Sapphire Radeon 9600xt 256mb and Catalyst 4.6-4.12
What's difference , CM, between cats 4.5 (and elder) and cats 4.6-5.1 that these latest cats don't work?
Please remember about users of elder radeon cards (like 9200/9500/9600) , not only x850pe users.

Well, some interesting driver this is.

First, Thank you Ati for adding support to ALL radeon cards, yes including the Mobility cards!
Second, looking at the inf file I was suprised to see a few mobility cards in them but not all. Is this some sort of experiment? or is the mobility radeon 9200 a card not used by OEM's? I was just wondering.

In any case Great job with this set, looks like it's gonna be an interesting year

Here's a new and interesting problem for me:

The TV Out produces only black and white output. I'm not getting any color at all. I've checked through all the settings I can think of and don't see anything that would affect this.

I've already restarted the computer a couple of times without any difference.

EDIT: Resolved! Apparently, the S-Video connector at the back of this machine had wiggled loose just enough to keep a signal going, but not quite enough to include the color. Pushing it back in securely has restored the color output on TV-Out.

Now, on with the testing!

I find no problems using these drivers w/9800pro, just where is the vsync control in the CCC.

The only benefit I see with the CCC is the AI control
