Sad newbie radeon 9600 xt problem Help Please!!

Hi I have a radeon 9600 xt in a brand new pc. The video card works fine until I try to run a 3d game (SIMS 2 or Metal of Honor) then it acts like the pc is not powerfull enough. The video and sound go choppy and the mouse becomes erratic and I can't click on anything but have to end the task. As soon as I bring up task manager everything goes back to normal even though the game is still running. As soon as the game display goes away all is fine. I have tried all the new drivers for the card and now have the omega drivers installed. I check all the bios settings, according to the omega site, and also reinstalled the motherboard nvidia drivers. Nothing helps.
PC:
Chaintech VNF3-250 motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 2800 CPU
Corsair Value Select 512MB Memory
Connect3d Radeon 9600XT Video
Seagate 120MB Sata HD
OnLite CDRW/DVD drive
Antec Case with 350 PSU
Has anyone seen this problem before?
HELP!
Thanks,
Deb

Go to smartgart tab and see if you have fastwrites on!

If not you could try to set fastwrites on in your bios in advanced chipset features. But you must also have set it when you installed the Omegas, otherwise you must uninstall them and install them again to check (radiobutton)that option.

Try to see if your dx9 is ok.Go to start, run and type dxdiag and run all the videotests Then run a benchmark like 3dmark 2003 several times to see if your system is stable enough. Good luck!
BTW Wellcome to DH!

I turned fast writes off since that is what I had read everywhere. I did the dxdiag test and the 3d acceleration doesn't work properly. The box is sooooo slow going up and down. In the 3D DirectDraw acceleration works but it does look a little choppy. I have Direct9c installed and that is ok. I will run the benchmark next but if the 3D accleration doesn't work that will be the problem. It hasn't been working from the beginning.

Thank you all very much. My card is defective! I check the picture against the card itself and one of the (I think they are resistors) was missing. I sent the card back and am awaiting a new one. I'll let you know if it works and I turned on fast writes.
