Agp 8x and system resourses

This is my first post so . . . Hello to everyone ! !

My problem here isn't so important but it makes me curious . . .

I enable agp 8x in my club 3d radeon 9800 pro 128 mb

via smartgart , system reboots , and memory usage has gone 95 mb !!!

thats a 30 mb difference from the previous 62 mb ( before the action ) .

What should i do to return memory resourses to original value ?

rig : P4 2.80@3.2 8IPE1000 PR02 F9(all drivers up-to-date) agp set in bios as

auto , win xp sp1 ( tryed sp2 sux ) , video driver : omega 2.5.90 ( have tryed

cat 4.9 4.10 same thing )

Is there any other application to enable agp 8x except smartgart ?

If yes please tell me

thanks in advance

You could always try to replicate the issue by going back to 4X AGP or whatever you had before and see if the memory usage drops. I seriously doubt it would, and if so then something else made the difference. If what you did was to actually install a full driver for the first time then it is normal for some memory to be used up. In that case I haven't compared the difference myself since not having a full driver is not much of an option.

thank u for replying

well i gone back to the previous state which was to actually dont have any agp accelaration ( is set to "off" ) and memory has been released to 62 again . . . ( apg 8x = much better fps so i dont worry that much )

but i dont know whats happening lol

same with agp 4x stays 92 .

what do u mean by full driver / ( and the Control Panel ? )

if 30 mb are ok for a driver to occupate alright . . .

offcourse u know that wouldn't take more than 10 mb

( somethings else is wrong here )

the thing is the 30 mb just come out of the blue

there are no obvious services and startup icons started

maybe theres an issue with the omega 4.10 betas ? (2.5.90)

When AGP is OFF then the driver does not initialise fully, wich makes all the difference. One cannot really 'use' a driver in that state due to the performance loss, wich makes the comparison between ON and OFF at least partly futile. I would guess that the amount of RAM usage is not much different with this driver from other recent ATI drivers, but if you feel like it then you can always make some comparisons. Could be interesting.

Yes !

You are right , i have tried the original cat 4.9 , 4.10 and saw the same

ammount of ram (92) used .

And also previously , scores at 3dmark01 didn't go beyond 16k (with agp off -

no driver ) , now they go around 19k

its the driver itself ! not only the agp accelaration !

Yet again dont u think 30 mb extra is TOO much ? maybe 10 or 15 but 30 ?

( gee ! the install files are no more than 15+9 mb = 24 mb ! )

Well ok as i said it isn't very important anyway

I don't know exactly how to judge what is too much without knowing more about the structure of drivers for high performance graphics, but when adding something like the CCC control panel on top then yes maybe it does become something to consider. Thanks to Omegadrive and ChrisW at least the CCC part is not necessary.

Sounds to me like this person has shadowing enabled in the BIOS.

You seem to have forgotten that windows uses some ram for AGP appature, so obviously with the AGP off it will use less ram
