Radeon 9600XT 256MB crashing. Please help
Well i got a brand new built by ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB 2 days ago and it hasn't worked right since i put it in. It gives me an error and then the hardware rendering fails.. in windows.. i'm not even like trying to play games or anything..
The errors come at random times, not even when i'm doing anything graphical, just browsing the web, etc. Here are the errors i get from VPU Recover.
VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands.
then..
VPU Recover was unable to fully recover from a hardware deadlock, and has switched to software rendering. To restore hardware rendering, you must restart your computer. Do you want to restart now?
After that things get pretty annoying with the software rendering, laggy graphics and the like. Even moving windows, scrolling a document or webpage lags graphically. If i try to do anything heavy it crashes, for obvious reasons.
Any ideas to a solution here?
Now, I haven't done any overclocking, and the drivers I have tried are from the CD, and from the website. After digging around I also tried the Omega Drivers.
I thought they had solved the problem, I was running stable and even in games. Then suddenly i got the same error while instant messaging my friend.
Could this be the result of a bad card? I don't know how it could be since it's brand new and been that way from the start but who knows. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to DriverHeaven!
You may want to read up on this: DRIVER INSTALLATION GUIDE FOR n00bs
If that fails, try doing this...
Download and install Driver Cleaner
My Computer, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, ATI Display Driver.
Select All, Ok. DO NOT REBOOT
Run Driver Cleaner, Select ATI, Clean, Yes, and then REBOOT.
Now install the new drivers.
If that fails...
Go to the SMARTGART(tm) tab
See if First Write is DISABLED, if it is ENABLE it. If you are using Omega Drivers click on Retest All and then ENABLE it.
Checking BIOS
Check to see if your APG Speed is up to the max... 1x, 2x, 4x, or 8x
Check to see if Fast Write is ENABLED or DISABLED. If it is DISABLED, ENABLE IT.
AGP Aperture Size, make sure it is at 128 MB.
If none of the above works, it might be a bad card...

sound driver causing the video crashes?
ok so after reformatting, i installed the radeon drivers first. i left all other drivers uninstalled for a while and just played with things, seeing if it was going to crash. it was working fine! next i installed the drivers for my wireless network adapter, and still everything was going great. i continued by installing my onboard AC97 sound driver. i restarted like you're supposed to when you install new hardware, and within 30 seconds of being in windows, i got the same error from my VPU Recover.
All I can conclude is that my onboard sound is somehow incompatible with my Radeon 9600XT? Is this a possibility? It seems a little weird to me but I guess its possible.
by the way the sound drivers i was using are from the CD, and i also tried downloading the latest drivers from MSI's website, but still no luck..

Ok disregard that last one, that was NOT it lol. Dang I give up, I've wasted so much bloody time on this thing. The only time I'm going to waste after now is to return the Radeon and put back my trusty Geforce 2 lol. Good old nVidia..

Sounds like it may be a faulty card. My 9600pro was like that, and when i got a 9600xt as a replacement and eventually a 9800pro, all was fine. May want to exchange it or even get a 9800pro as they are not too much more expensive and the performance increase is definitely worth it.
