Confused about updating bios in rad 9700pro

I've been reading a lil of everything on updating the bios .. but i guess i should ask the questions i can't find answers for..

1. what is the benifit of updating the bios. performance gains? stability?
2. i have a powercolor 9700 pro commando (i think) and i do suffer from periodic problems. would all ati rv cards be the same as in bios versions?
3. in the end is it more trouble then its worth?

I do update everything on my computer when i can.. mb.. cdrws and dvdrws... sometimes hd's vid card i'm skeptical on.

thanx to all ..
sorry if this is a repeated question, i could not find something simular thru search.
