ati smart shader question

hi

i would like to know if it's possible to make and ati smart shader effect that would basicly draw everything in black and white BUT the closer objects would be brighter and those far away darker (the more away - the darker). i would need this for the depth of field effect (bright = sharp, dark = blurer).

any information about this would be much appreciated.

possibly look at the shader they used for that in Painkiller, as it works not just with ATis, but across the board..it may have some useful information if you can find it
