HELP! DVI output to DVI-HDTV not working for me!
Hey, I am going nuts here, so I am hoping someone can help me... I have a Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro, and I also have a nice Samsung DLP TV with DVI input. I decided today to purchase a nice DVI cable to hook those two things up, and enjoy some DVD's in nice pure digitality.(if that is even a word.... ) ANYWAY, got it all hooked up and stuff, turned on the system... and it showed up on the tv PERFECTLY... boot screens, all that good old stuff.... but as soon as windows loaded up... BAM! No more display... pure blackness and it says "No Signal" on my tv. I assumed... "Well, get new drivers moron!" and plugged up a normal monitor and updated drivers... Still nothing though. Tried having both monitors on, and doing an extended desktop thing, just to get it going... still nothing. When I go into safe mode, or if I go into VGA mode, not using the Radeon drivers obviously, it works fine... hence I know it has to be something with the drivers. I just need to figure out a way to MAKE the drivers work, since w/o them... playing DVDs or games is pretty much pointless in and of itself. So PLEASE, someone if you have any ideas, let me know... I have searched for the last 7 hours trying to find something, and have yet to make any progress... Other than finding the nice Omega drivers... which still didn't help. Anyway, hope someone can help me soon... I am hoping to get this going before my 2 days off is up... and I miss out on enjoying my beautiful display...
Argh!

you must go into display properties.... settings.. advanced... hit the displays tab.... and turn on your 2nd monitor/hdtv.... and setup some of the internal workings... if the defaults don't work right... What's happening is your DVI output is being turned off by default as it detects the VGA monitor as the default PRIMARY monitor...... however... if it works the way mine does... if you want to set your tv to the primary for bootup... everything....unplug your monitor... from the VGA port.... and bootup....... should work that way if your not sure how to change things up.. Problem being that everything... even games will try to load up on the TV now....

Well, I tried that stuff... except for what you said about change some of the internals... not much I can change in the advanced tab, and the stuff I can change doesn't help any... the other monitor is enabled, i have tried enabling it as an extended monitor, and as primary... also have tried booting in with just it connected, all to no avail. Any other ideas?

Well the attempt is appreciated... When I go to the displays tab, it shows the top two Monitor tabs are highlighted... since I am using the DVI, the TV tab is not highlighted, and neither is the FPD tab... beh. I don't know, I also am somewhat annoyed at the fact that on ATI's site, to get tech support costs freaking 2.95 a minute on a 900 number? What is up with that?! Oh well. Charging for support on issues that is caused by their drivers and hardware? Argh!

Try hooking your monitor back up, or just booting into safe mode, go to the Hardware Manager, and remove all the Display's (Monitors), then reboot. It sounds like it's trying to load a refresh rate not compatible for your TV.

In the Options tab of the ATI Advanced Properties, there are a few options, Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays, and Alternate DVI operational mode, have you tried those two yet? And when booting into Safe Mode, what type of Monitor is installed in Hardware Manager?

Tried em both, and when I am in Safe Mode... it doesn't show any monitors in the device manager... in normal mode, they show up as Plug and Play monitors though...

you mentioned Sumsung.... that's your TV?..... try looking for DVI inf files.... you might have to find your manual for the tv... as it might be a simple little switch in the ATI or display drivers to get it to be completely recongnized...

Heh, looked for those too... nothing on Samsung's site for them... I tried Powerstrip's "make your own" thing, and put all the specs for the TV... max res, refresh, all that... and still nothing. I did figure something out though... when I use the DVI-Analog adapter and plug it into my normal CRT monitor, it works... it sends a signal through and everything... but when I hook it directly DVI-DVI... again, it just immediately says "No Signal" on the TV... its like the card is just trying to send the wrong type of signal or something... I just can't figure out why it would work so utterly perfect before it loads the ATI drivers... I mean, what is up with that?

set the refresh rate to the lowest possible setting available ... you might have to uncheck the "Hide unsupported refresh rate".... and i think the lowest is 46hz or something... try it.... it could be a strange refresh rate issue.... (saposedly 60hz is NTCS (spelling) and 54 or 55hz is PAL....(default)... i've encounter one strange occurance here were a tv i plugged into went totally nutz.... had to set the refresh rate super low....

Amazing, I have a thread about HDTV, that just faded to the bottom. Everytime I bring up the idea of why DVI/HDTV doesn't have stretch feature, no response. I don't know why this thread is getting more response. But that's alright, Ima give insight anyway.
Check it out mang, you have never mentioned what resolution you were running at. You notice how the boot screen worked and not the windows. You know why, it's because you need to force a desktop resolution of 640x480.
Select list all modes.
Select 640x480, any bit depth you want.
If it works, cool. I will not be the one to go through the whole thing about all the resolutions. That will happen when ATI adresses all the problems with DVI compatibility.

Below 30.... i did reply to your other threads.. however... at the time... i didn't have ANY at all possible way to try/test/confirm... let alone do anything dealing with DVI or a HDTV at all.... (seeing as i had a 8500le at the time or a 9200 which didn't have dvi)

First off, I'm not singling any one out. I was refering to my thread that is on page two. Not previous threads. I just posted my thread very recently and no comments, which is cool. I just wondered why this thread got replys to basically the same topic, which is HDTV. It was just an interesting observation.
Most important will be if my suggestion helps this indivvidual out.

Below, that was a great idea... but still didn't work... I just really think there must be a limitation to ATI's drivers or something... I noticed that even though it is showing the correct DDC information for my TV in the Displays tab, (Samsung DLP, 1280x720 max res, 85hz) it won't allow me to go to 1280x720 res for some reason, even in the "List all modes" button... It really makes no sense to me either, because sometimes it WILL show that res as available... Beh, its insane!

This is really a problem for ATI directly to take care of. They know about it and have known for a few years. Why they don't address it, there is no clear motive. If they didn't sell the component dongle separately, I wouldn't mind. Since they do, they should make sure that HDTV's are fully compatible with the drivers, via DVI and component.
It's funny that they have a HDTV tuner coming out and still, there are only driver updates, that focus on game demos. I mean they would rather fix game demos than DVI input.
Do this mang, uninstall your card drivers and uninstall your CRT physically . Reboot and see if your HDTV works. Reinstall the drivers, make the HDTV primary display. Connect your CRT back while computer on. Exit display properties, then go back and enable CRT (when you plug CRT in live, make sure monitor off first). HDTV's will usually sync by default to 640x480. Judas - Yeah, I tried em... currently using em now actually
Below - Tried it... nothing. I emailed ATI's tech-support with the problem(let's see how THAT goes)...
but for now, I really am out of ideas... I was so looking forward to playing some Neverwinter Nights on my 50"... oh well the dream is over for now... lol If anyone else has any ideas... I am open to em, and will lug my computer back downstairs to try em... so if you have an epiphany... let it out!

A fallback approach is to use the S-Video out on the card... although it won't provide a resolution that you'd like (maxium being 800x600.. although NOT the true 800x600)....... you can enable FSAA and still get a good picture... i know this isn't the point though... but i believe Terry will look into this.... If there is a solution he can fix it.... but as it stands... it seems as if the ati cards support HDTV's via the DVI unofficially..... i hope this gets fixed really soon as i plan on making a Media Center out of another rig....
