all catalysts: openGL games stuttering!! Not just COD

Hi all,

I basically found that all opengl games are stuttering using any of the catalysts drivers when the game quality settings are set to their maximum (with fsaa/af = 4x/8x). These opengl games that i have tried include Day Of Defeat (old game and i still can't play at max quality without stuttering), Return to castle wolfenstein, Enemy Territory, Call Of Duty. In d3d games, however, i don't have any of the stuttering problems even when i set all the game quality settings to their maximum. The example of D3D games include UT2003 and Max Payne 2. Both of them run without stuttering at the highest quality settings.

I don't know whether it's just the hardware limitation on the opengl engines or there are bugs with the catalyst drivers. I really think that there is a bug with the cats ogl driver seeing old games like day of defeat can stutter with card like radeon 9700. I hope that catalyst driver team would look into these opengl issues seeing that there are quite a few good games using opengl engines (like COD and the upcoming DOOM3).
The problem is basically with opengl games, we can't use maximum settings (with fsaa/af = 4x/8x) without stuttering while all D3D games run superbly on the same settings.

edit: if i run opengl games at high quality instead of extreme quality for example, they run just fine. The problem is that with cards like 9800 and 9700 series we want to be able to play the games at the highest quality settings. Hope that the catalyst maker / team can look into this problem or at least have some explanations to the issues.

btw my spec is
athlon xp 2600+
512 MB twinx corsair XMS
a7n8x
Sapphire radeon 9700
audigy1
maxtor 80 GB

It could be the thing that i need. Just wondering, do you lose IQ with this patch ogl driver?? I assume they are from cats 3.7 where they still have the 16 bit colour bug. So is it noticable?
Or which patch should i try? which one is the best?

The other point is you don't experience stuttering on ogl games. You don't notice that opengl games run slower than equivalent d3d games. For example in your machine which one faster Max Payne 2 or COD? I know it's not exactly apple to apple but rough guess.

Well i would say thank you for your patches.

edit: how do you install the patch? double click on the com file or the bat file?

wow.......

your patch cured the lock up problems in COD. Not sure about the performance yet but the quality seems to be about the same (but i need a more careful testings). So where is this 16 bit colour bug? I can't see it in your 3.7 ogl driver. The IQ is about the same as 3.9 ogl driver in COD. The performance is also a bit faster.

Thanks The_Neon_Cowboy. Good Work!!!
