Call Of Duty: Issues with Radeon 95/96/97/9800 cards

All,

I've been chatting with ATI regarding the issue where Call Of Duty hangs when using a Catalyst 3.8 and 3.9 drivers on your Radeon 9500/9600/9700/9800 series card. There are many solutions on the internet at this time however I thought it best to make you aware of ATI's current recommended solution should you experience the concern....so here it is...

ATI's recommended solution at this time is to use the Catalyst 3.7 drivers. ATI are also actively working on a permanent fix for the drivers and we will let you know if there is one. Until then the official bug report is here and you can click "notify me of updates" to receive an update when its available.

May want to add the 8500 to your list. I have tried everything available and the game (MP) still freezes on me. ATI drivers tried: 3.4's, 3.5's, 3.7's and 3.9's.

Well not really. There is one more option (but I cant really talk about it). You could use the OGL file from CAT 3.7 on the CAT 3.8 drivers.

Sorry cant say more, but Im sure one of the tech savvy guys on here can help you further if you need it.

It's inconsistent. Needless to say using the OGL component from CAT 3.7 in the CAT 3.9 environment seems to do the trick

But with 3.7 you get a 16bit texture bug - it looks real fugly when you die in slow motion blur thingy...

I found out that certain CONFIG.CFG changes stabilize the problem a little, not 100% and NOT for everyone.

Also - how is it FAST WRITES released? Since disabling that FIXES the problem!

Also - setting settings from EXTRA to HIGH ALSO fixes the problem!

So, is that a bandwith issue?

Funny yeah, I have the demo and it is doing great from the first time I started it,
on my 9700np cat 3.9 and I keep on playing it over and over again,
'cause it plays different every time, wish I had the money to buy it.

You are correct. There are many workarounds and if disabling Fast Writes fixes it then for sure thats the best way to go!

Its not a bandwidth issue per se but an AGP bus issue. We will work hard to get the proper fix out.

9700pro here- NO lockups EVER- not once.

But using extra textures (characters and general) gives unbearable stuttering. Even at 80 to 100 fps..

8x AGP, FR off. 1024 x 768 4xAA, 16xAF. But this happens no matter what any other settings are..

-same with 3.7, 3.8, 3.9...

Can't wait to play this game with with extra textures without stuttering.

Used 3.8 and had lockups on the car driveing part, towards the beginning of the game.
Disabled Fastwrites, still had the lockups.
Set visual settings from Extra, to High, and that fixed it.
Since Ati got the aiw bug fixed, I am now running the 3.9's and haveing no problems, and things are on extra again, seem to work jsut fine.
I might add too, that the 3.9's are by far the best for me visually....crisper, clearer, and better color, similar to the 3.5 cats before the hotfix, look really crisp and clear, and better color.

I also might add that AA with this game is kinda wierd too. It's not a MAJOR deal, but it does exsist with both 3.8 and 3.9.
Settings of 4x fsaa, on the dam level, if you turn to the right and look at the water at the beginning of the map, turning far enough to the right, the water turns black. Turn to the left again, and it goes back to normal. Useing 2x fsaa this does not happen.
I'm not blameing the drivers or the game for this, because I'm not sure wich it is causeing it. it only happens with 4x, but not 4x, just kinda weird is all. Something I can deal with, it's not a really bad issue.
Just thought I'de give the info out, so maybe Ati could check into it and see if it was actually a driver thing, or a game thing.

All in all, I am very pleased so far with 3.9's.
This is of crose speaking for myself only, not anyone else.

fix for 3.8 and 3.9

hey guys i was browsin around and i noticed everyone is stupmed. well i have fixed the issue with the cat 3.8 and 3.9 drivers. its very easy.

this is what i did.

i have a radeon 9800XT and CAT 3.9's

to fix the problem simple go into your BIOS and disable AGP FASTWRITES. THEN go into your CAT 3.8-3.9 control panel under the SMARTGART tab and disable FASTWRITES there as well. that should do the trick. it has worked for everyone else i told about this fix. good luck

Dude- that doesn't work.
Thanks for input- but I've done that (had those settings from beginning) and it had no affect on stuttering- I actually thought I had the solution- changing some cvar commands, but it only helped a little- when I went back to maps that I know had bad stuttering really bad, it was just as bad as ever..

If it works for you cool, but go back to where you had problems and double check to see if you have them there, I noticed some maps are much better than others..

To me the answer to that is yes - MUCH better! The extra textures look awesome, very high detail- just the way I want to experience the game. The plain "high" settings remind me of what the game might look like at a step down in resolution.

I posted a few screens in a few places- I'll just post this one here so as not to clog up the thread---
this is on extra texture setting.
See what you think- this is just a jpeg at 1024 x 768 - but the extra textures almost make it look like a higher res screen.

MAn this game is SO addictive!
Haven't finished it the first time yet. I think, or would think, Im jsut about done now. At the part where I jsut blew up 2 air cannons, and got documents from like 2 bunkers, and killed the 2 tanks at the end up the hill a little.
I thought I'de never get to drive a tank, but man I got to the level before, wheee, was that ever fun!, blowing stuff up, BOOM!
This game will definately put a damper on bf:1942 I think, it's SO amazeingly real, sounds are nice, visuals are nice, FUN game.

I just tried the sp demo out after reading this. I had previously downloaded it but was engrosed with Americas Army (which just got a new patch). I got a cannot open open gl subsystem message with cat 3.9 and also cat 3.9 patched (in my understanding) with the atioglxx.dll file from cat 3.7. Same message. Ne ideas? Ta.

Hi, I realise this may not be the best thread to post this question in, but I really don't see the need to start another thread just for it Also, I've asked this question on 2 other boards (including Rage3D.... 3 times in the same thread ) and so far it's been totally ignored.

So I'm hoping for better luck here.

Anyway, I have a 9800pro 128mb and am running the 3.6 Cats. I realise there's a problem with the shell-shock effect with those drivers (that I believe has since been fixed in 3.9's) but after all of the problems with those later drivers and this game, I feel that particular graphic anomoly is something I can live with. I haven't had a single crash playing through the SP game with 3.6

Anyway, my question is about Character Shadows. I know they exist, because they are evident in some review screenshots. But I don't have them on my machine, I don't have any options in setup to enable them and when setting seta cg_shadows "0" to "1" in the config file, but it automatically resets back to "0".

There's something about playing a game where the characters don't even exhibit 'blob' shadows that I just can't stand.

Therefore I'm wondering if it's the same for everyone else, or just something I've screwed up (or is maybe because I'm using older Cats)

Any advice would be appreciated

MuffinMan,

It's quite possible the problem is a bug in the CAT 3.6 drivers. Have you checked the settings in the OpenGL section of the Control Panel?

After trying the official 3.8 and 3.9 drivers, I've been using Omega's latest 'leaked' drivers without any problems to date. I heartily recommend giving them a tryout.

I wonder if raising the AGP Aperture size would help?

At present, with Omega's leaked drivers, I've had excellent results across the board.
