Explain the 9700-9800 hack option please
I have a ati 9700np that is flashed with a pro bios. I just installed the newest omega drivers and there is an option to use a 9700-9800 hack. What is this and what does it do. I cant seem to find any information on the webpage about it.

Moved to the correct forum.
And welcome
basically they 9700>9800 mod makes the driver use slightly different instructions in the driver that are meant for the 9800. This improves performance under AA/AF on some systems.

Can we expand on "some" systems ?
I've been thinking about it too, but ...well don't know if there is really any need for it.
System Specs:
ATI 9700 Pro (stock)
512MB
XP2200+ (Stock)
Epox 8k3a+
WinXP pro
Currently Cat3.5 ... soon to try Omega 3.5 'cause RB6 is looking like crap
thanks!

Wow, its the new guy thread.
Welcome Smeerak too.
Basically, some users can apply the mod and they get better scores, some users apply it and there is no difference.
I havent really looked into it as i dont feel i need extra performance. I think the level it improves your performance by is relative to your system. For example,
If your system is GPU bottlenecked then this will probably help a little. However if your system is CPU bottlenecked then you wont get an increase because even though the GPU throughput has increased your still being held back by the limitations of your CPU.

excellent !
That's a wicked answer. Thanks for being concise.
I've often thought about maybe upgrading the CPU and the RAM especially since I bought the 9700 pro. I suppose I should do some browsing and see if I can't find some old benchmark comparisons between these two chips... hmmm ... do you think that I would see an significant performance increase ?
(hope I'm not thread hijacking here I suppose I could just PM your next time...)
thanks!
p.s. I'm a poster @ Rage3D ...thought I'd come over and see what DH had to offer : )

Specs are 'now' in my sig ...
if anything the proc and ram , the mobo will handle ACK! I just checked the new reccomended proc listing ...
I'm down to a t-bred XP2600+ is my max chip, along with that I'd get PC2700 RAM ... other than that I'd need to upgrade the mobo ... DOH! At one point I was able (says EPOX) to handle the 2800+ ... must have been before bartons were announced ?
anyhoo, the big difference I guess would be the addition of the DDR333 as opposed to my current DDR266...
probably not worth upgrading at any rate.

Well I think it actually makes a positive difference with high quality settings on. Only problem is I am comparing the hack + omega 3.5 drivers to using catalyst 3.4 drivers. I am getting the same performance with my direct 3d settings at "high quality" that I got before with them set at "High Performance". Quite the difference actually now that I think about it. Well I will do some more testing and see but I am very happy with my performance right now and everything works so.

...But, will this hack work on the "9700pro" the same as on the "9700non-pro"?

It must ... there is no difference between a pro and a non-pro ... other than the memory and clock 'default' speeds.

HI,
It does work on both the pro and non pro.
Smeerak, if your interested in knowing what a 2600+ and ddr333 gets you with a 9700pro in a particular game or test, let me know - thats the specs i have.

I ran 3DMark03 with everything running in the background and such before installing the 9800 "Hack" on my Built by ATI AIW 9700 Pro.
-
With no other changes my 3DMark doubled.

I think the answer is to mod 9500 np to 9700 or 9800.
This is same but different way.
