Radeon 9700 driver issue (this is bad plz help)
Hi
I have a problem with my Sapphire Radeon 9700 non pro and i think it's the driver.
As soon as i install the display drivers windows gets bad. It has trouble drawing stuff i think. If i drag a window around on the desktop it freezes and then continues moving and then freeze and so on, and when i open the start menu with fade effect turned on then it freezes when it's drawing the start menu and also when when i click away the start menu it also freezes a while. When windows media player goes from small mode to full mode with "file" menu and that, then the same things happens.
If i turn down acceleration 2 steps ("Disable all cursor and advanced drawing accelerations. Use this setting to correct drawing problems") in the "troubleshoot" tab in the drivers then it works normal.
It has never been like this before, something must be busted.
I have completly formated and reinstalled windows 3 times and the porblem is still there as soon as i install the display drivers, i have tried catalyst 3.4 and 3.5 and both of them used to work before.
I have tried to disable fastwrites, agp 8x etc etc
Using ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe and winXP pro, i have no PCI cards installed
Anyone has any idea what may be the cause ?
Thanks

Two things:
1) Check for IRQ conflicts. (accessories -> system tool -> system information) -- You should see your 9700 having an assigned IRQ. If it's sharing with something else (aside from "placeholder"), you might want to change that. If it's another card in a PCI slot, you can change it in your system bios or by moving the card to another slot.
2) Check that smartgart is running. Under the tabs for services, look for "ati smart". It should be set to automatic or running. If it isn't, enable it, and reboot.
3) If neither helps, I would suggest uninstalling the control panel and drivers, reboot, then install cat 3.5 again.
Good luck.

Does this happen with different driver revsions? What concerns me from what you described is that you are getting problems whenever the hardware accelleration on the graphics board is switched on (i.e. when the drivers become active) and that this problem goes away when certain hardware accelleration features are turned off. I fear your card may be tits up.
Do a reinstall of your drivers (sorry for repeating advice), try a different driver, reinstall DirectX and if all this fails, try your card on a different computer.

Thanks for the help guys.
I tried all the diffrent drivers i could find, they all have the problem.
The radeon didnt share irq.
I just now noticed the the problem goes away if i set windows to 16bit color and full acceleration enabled, but i dont really want that and i dont really want to run 32bit with acceleration turned down either so im gonna keep searching for the problem.

Sounds like an issue with 8x AGP then, is the KX7R a 4x AGP mobo or 8x? Your 8500 is a 4x AGP card while the 9700 is 8x. Try setting the 9700 to run at 4x in your bios to see what happens. Come to think of it, check that your bios is set to 8x AGP when you are using the 9700. this could be a fault with either the mobo or the card. Which version of Nforce2 drivers are you using, btw?
