??? ATI Radeon HD 4870 + 9250 Lost

Hi All,

I recently purchased a Radeon HD 4870 to replace my old 9600XT as my main graphics card. Unfortunately I still need my 9250 PCI card for my third monitor. Before the upgrade I had the 9600 and 9250 running along side each other fine as although it was not not the best for performance they both worked with the same Cat Drivers.

Now the 9250 needs the 6-11 and the new card uses the new 9-9 drivers. I cannot seem to install both sets of cat drivers on the same machine without overwriting system files from one of the driver sets.

Both drivers overwrite each other. I cant seem to find any way around this without rebuilding the drivers (which I both don't feel comfortable doing or have the time to do).

Does anyone have a solution to this problem that I have missed. Surely ATI drivers can't be that bad

ANY help would be greatly appreciated! (I am pretty sure this problem could be fixed with an *Nvidia* :P PCI card but I am currently looking for a 0 cast solution to my 3rd monitor problem)

[ System: Windows XP SP3, Intel Core2]

Re: ATI Radeon HD 4870 + 9250 Lost

you may be able to do that with windows 7 but that requires you to buy it......

you can get a DX10 PCI card....

Newegg.com - POWERCOLOR 24PRO256M PCI Radeon HD 2400PRO 256MB 64-bit DDR2 PCI HDCP Ready Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

you generally cannot install two separate GPU drivers on Windows XP.... it doesnt matter if its Nvidia or ATi in XP

Thanks, I have been considering the upgrade however am kinda low on cash at the moment. If I were to upgrade it would have to be to the Professional version, so *lots* of cash.

I was hoping to not have to buy a new card as well, my 9250 works! This stuff should just work, drivers should be compatible no matter what else is running on the system [obviously within reason]....

yea it sucks.....

if only they just included the actual driver in the future sets.... just not update them.....

anyways.... had you bought a 5000 series card you couldve easily run all 3 monitors from the card with an HDMI and 2 DVI

I know you don't want to buy another card, but you can run two GPUs under XP if they are different..... Nvidia PCI card should work with your ATI....... Which you already figured, just saying it works for me under XP and was a seamless install.

Re: ATI Radeon HD 4870 + 9250 Lost

i guess it can work in some cases.... never really tried it but if you use the device manager and have it select specific drivers for devices, it might work..... but i dunno what thee exact circumstances of it working are....

if the 4870 is brand new, recommend returning it and getting an HD 5750 or 5770..... and an HDMI to DVI cable..... that should do what you want and be alot better in the long run...

Yes, It does work if I buy another card but I do not want to buy another card! I want working software...

Has no one come across this problem. I would have thought it would have been a popular problem with ATI cards considering apart from really old computers I cannot see another reason why anyone would need a PCI graphics card apart from to use as a second card.

[Obviously unless other people research and see that they would also have this problem]
