exclamation New ATI Radeon HD4650 driver wont install?!?

Little Help?

OS: Windows XP Pro, build 2600 SP3
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-K8NSC-939
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.8GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
PSU: Antec NeoPower 550 Watt

Summary: Old AGP vid card went bad, replaced with the ATI Radeon 4600 AGP. Tried to install the ATI Display Driver Suite and got the following error message:
"SEVERE: Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or OS. Install will now exit."

Installed Omega Drivers v4.8.442 and mobo drivers.

Set BIOS to auto-detect AGP speed, nope. Set BIOS to 8x AGP, reboot, nope.

No errors detected in DXDIAG or in Device Manager.

Odd thing is that since installing the new AGP card, my CPU Usage stays in the 60% to 80% range AT IDLE.

It seems like the mobo and vidcard are fighting each each other.....

What gives? Any ideas?

Re: New ATI Radeon HD4650 driver wont install?!?

Sounds like you need the hot fix driver.....

Catalyst AGP Hotfix - Radeon HD 3000 and Radeon HD 2000 Series AGP products

If you're not sure if those will work, Check your manufacturer's website.

Thanks for replying!

I downloaded the hotfix from the link you provided and the ATI Catalyst installed correctly! Woo Hoo!

Unfortunately, I still have the AGP hardware conflict that is hammering my CPU (70% at idle!).

Where to go next? Install the Omega Drivers v4.8.442 (after uninstalling CCC)?

Re: New ATI Radeon HD4650 driver wont install?!?

That could be motherboard drivers/smartgart Drivers, I would suggest updating them. And then reinstall the hotfix drivers, your card is to new for the Omegas, as they are nearing 2 years in age.

I would suggest a complete reinstall of motherboard drivers, then reinstall the graphics drivers.

Re: New ATI Radeon HD4650 driver wont install?!?

Once again, thanks for the reply!

Quick question:

I have attempted to replace my Mobo chipset drivers with the "original" CD that came with the Mobo (circa 2001). When I insert the CD, it just comes up that they are already installed, and will not allow me to proceed.

I have already downloaded the "Final" update for these drivers from NVidia & Gigabyte.

Do I have to replace them while in Safe Mode or anything, or can I simply run the installer and reboot following completion?

I get the feeling I may be missing something simple here; forest for the trees, and all that.

Reinstalled latest Mobo drivers.

Reinstalled latest hotfix from ATI.

No change to the CPU just grindng away....

Anything look suspicious?

-----------------------------------------------------------
I cannot understand why this install is turning out to be so complex!

AGP is old technology... it's not like I am trying to split atoms or overclock anything here...

At this point I am considering going to Newegg and buying a replacement NVidia GeForce 6600 card as ATI/Radeon does not appear to have their stuff in one bag....

Re: New ATI Radeon HD4650 driver wont install?!?

Nice catch! I thought I had gotten all Omega drivers out, but apparently not.

Uninstalled all Omegas. Reboot.

Reinstalled ATI drivers from the CD the board came with. Reboot.

Installed 9.9 AGP hotfix. Reboot.

CPU is still almost pegged out at idle, ATI CCC SMARTGART AGP current settings are still greyed out.

Only noticeable change is that now my monitor is set to an almost unreadable 1280 x 960 resolution.

Can I provide any info at all here that may help resolve this before I sell this ATI card at my next garage sale?

By the way, yesterday I removed the ATI Radeon and reinstalled my old NVidia GeForce 6600. After the Hardware Wizard found the drivers, I was doing just fine until it froze up, which is the reason I got a new card.....

As soon as I put the Radeon back in, the CPU problem came right back.

Re: New ATI Radeon HD4650 driver wont install?!?

Well any time you switch manufactuerers you have to clean everything out.

If the settings are greyed out sounds to me like smartgart was not installed correctly.

I believe ATI has smartgart drivers on their website, have you tried them directly? Did you update your motherboard drivers??? (Not necessarily the ones from the website either. I had *lot* of problems with Nforce 3 Boards and getting them to correctly video accelerate. I can only suggest trying the nforce remix drivers @ guru3d.com or trying theirs. They also should have the AGP driver for your system.

Re: New ATI Radeon HD4650 driver wont install?!?

I can't get mine (asus ah 4650-their version of radeon HD 4650 AGP) to work either. And I think that "hotfix" is for the 4000 SERIES cards, not the 4600 series, so the "hotfix" isn't designed to fix this issue anyways. I think I'm just going to RMA it and get a different non ati agp card.

Hey thanks to tipstaff I finally got it working, check out my post in my thread for full instructions. I have an Nforce 3 motherboard, and the onboard audio was basically conflicting, believe it or not, with the ATI cards audio. Oh well, its worth a shot to check out.
