Crash Rome with 8.10 Radeon 9600 Pro

Hello all,

I have a problem with playing Rome: Total War - Gold Edition after updating to 8.10. Ever since ATI updated to 7.9 (and later) I have been having problems with playing games. I have an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB (AGP). On 7.8 Rome worked fine and most of my other games did to, but some games demanded and update. I switched to the Omega drivers based on 7.12 and those also worked fine, but there were still games that wouldn't run with those drivers. So I decided to upgrade to 8.10 and see if they work. Now all my games run totally fine, with the exception of Rome.
It starts up nicely and has no problems when I get to the menu. I can click everything and it responds like it should. But when I for instance start up the proloque, I get the movie, skip that and then get to the campaign map. It then appears to work fine for about 5 seconds before the screen goes black flashes black and then goes blue. It has nothing on it, just a blue screen. No letters, errors or anything. The only thing I can do is press the off button for a couple of seconds to shut it down and then reboot.
After the reboot, everything works fine again and I can find a MEMORY.DMP file in my windows folder. The size is just over 1GB, a bit larger than my RAM memory which is 1024mb. So all my other games work just fine, only Rome will not work and I would love to be able to play all of my games. So help me please.

I will add a DxDiag. The memory.dmp (I found out how to exctract it) I will add later, just deleted it so I can't open it now.

If this is in the wrong forum, please move it to the correct one. I just didn't know where else to post this.

Hi there and welcome to DriverHeaven!

Since you are using and older Radeon I would recomend to use the "good" old 7.9 driver sets since after them there hasn't been any big improvements to the older 9XXX series of radeon's.

Re: Crash Rome with 8.10 Radeon 9600 Pro

Thank you, have not had the change to introduce my properly. Will do so after this.

As you may have read, several games don't seem to function without the latest drivers. And I wish to able to play all my games, but Rome is the only one so far giving me problems. And you say you have not seen any big improvements but I feel like my games are actually running smoother and more stable with the latest drivers than with the 7.8 drivers I first had.

I am now going to try out the 8.11 RC1 drivers and just hope they function. If not, I will revert back to 8.10 and just hope that the Omega project isn't dead and that there will be an update soon.

Edit:
I have a memory dump file analysis. Doesn't seem to work though. If anyone can help me to get a better one, please tell me.

is rome an opengl game? if it is, you could put the atioglxx.dll from cat7.8 into the game folder while all other games use the later driver normally

games can demand a new driver?

Re: Crash Rome with 8.10 Radeon 9600 Pro

Rome is not a opengl game. At least, not that I know. Just checked the box, it says it needs directx 9.0c, so that means it is not opengl right? xD
And I'm starting to think that the omega drivers were the problem. But some games won't run with omega (which uses ati 7.12) or say that I need the latest drivers.
I am now running 7.8 again, but now I can't get mohaa to run, it is starting to get really annoying that there are always probs with ati drivers.

Re: Crash Rome with 8.10 Radeon 9600 Pro

there are always problems with all drivers for anything & everything, it's just a coincidence you want to have rome & mohaa at the same time

so is mohaa asking to update or something?? isnt it an old game? (it's also opengl/quake3)

Re: Crash Rome with 8.10 Radeon 9600 Pro

It was a problem with openGL, so I once again updated to 8.10. Now all of the sudden, everything works. Rome, mohaa and every other game. So it seems the problem fixed itself in the end. Don't know why though, but I don't mind as long as it works.

Edit:
Tried to start up Rome just to be sure it still works and it crashed once again. I really have no clue why it keeps happening and why it did work that one time. Guess I have to keep looking for another solution.

Edit2:
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 also won't work under 8.10. So I once again decided to revert back to 7.8 so I could at least play Red Alert 3. It's always something with these stupid ATI drivers.

Is there anyone that knows a more recent version that works with all AGP cards and allows me to play openGL games and all of my other games?
