I didnt understoo why did i have to select from the ATI page "windows XP home edition" and then "Integrated/Motherboard -- Radeon X1200" i thought Radeon x1200 is the graphic card not the mother board, i guess this doesnt make any difference since anyways i had to install the catalyst suite either way? aditional information about my computer: (current)operative system: windows xp home edition processor : Mobile , 1900 MHz mother board: TOSHIBA Satellite P200D graphic card :ATI radeon x12000 series |

163.91fps on the CS:S Stress test using the Cat 8.7's AGP Hotfix here at 1680x1050 max settings. I am extremely pleased with the results. That 3850 and these new drivers just put some much needed life back into this ol' system!! Yea Baby! I was lucky to break 90fps before with my old 7800GS.
97.41fps in the HL2: Lost Coast stress test with the same settings as above, 1680x1050 maxed. I was lucky if I ever broke 45fps with my old 7800GS. Very pleased with this new set.

I did speak a bit to quickly I think. Performance is up a notch but I've had a number of BSOD's since I installed 8.7, I had none before, so I guess this set of drivers aren't entirely stable, at least not on my system.

Hi thanks for answer my question, the thing is i dont know anything about computers whatsoever so im gonna need a little more explanation, for example, what do you mean with "you now need to do is to get the mod tool and use it to mod the drivers. Then uninstall the current ones and reboot and install the modded ones."? currently in my c:/ATI/SUPPORT folder i have 3 folders "6-1-pre-r300_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_38185" "8-6-igp_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_sb_gart_enu_64783" and "8-7-igp_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_sb_gart_enu_6599" i guess the last one is from the catalyst driver suite 8.7 that i installed before. So what do exactly i have to do? do i have to uninstall first this driver? if so, do i do it in the control panel/ add or remove programs?, and then how do i exactly mod the drivers before installing them, i got the mood tool, but i though that to mood the driver i have to browse in my c:/ATI/SUPPORT to the "8-7-igp_xp32..." folder and into the "driver" folder and then click modify but if the driver is not supposed to be installed yet so where do i "modify" it? "uninstall the current ones and reboot and install the modded ones" which ones are the "current ones" that i have to uninstall before installing the modified ones? thanks in advance and apologies for being such computer illiterate |

When you can downloaded it run the .exe file and let it extract the setup files to the c:\ATI\ directory. When it's done it will launch setup but you click cancel on it. Then you run the mod tool to mod the drivers. Then you run the setup from the c:\ATI\[driver version]\ directory. Remember to use the newest mod tool 1.1.1.0 since the 1.1.0.0 had some bug that caused some issues with the ATI installer. Get the mod tool here. |

I've got a strange one. Running XP Pro (with a Visiontek HD4870), and I cannot get the 8.7 installer to run. It keeps aborting setup because "I'm not running as administrator". I've tried installing on my main account (with admin rights), and I even logged in as administrator and tried again - no joy. Anyone have a clue as to WTF? I've never had a problem with Catalysts before... I may regret coming back to ATI.... Thanks for any ideas.

Never mind - forgot that you have to uninstall catalyst first - got used to nvidia letting you simply overwrite...

Just tried Crysis demo after a long time and it now plays fine (intro) without any artefacts/stuttering (HD3850) but what the heck happened to the game's scenery quality? It's on HIGH details and everything looks soft and blurry?
it's awful! what happened? |

I can't comment on Crysis, but I finally started playing GRAW again and it's spectacular. I could barely play GRAW before with my 7800GS at 1024x768, but now I'm playing it at 1680x1050 with all the settings on high. I am very pleased with this driver and with my HD3850.

Rosco, so you see the same effect of blurring the scenery to save GPU load? - this way making the game more playable on higher settings?
I think this is a very bad trade in..coz it simply looks awful |

People with dual 280GTX's and 4870's with today's Quad Cores can barely play Crysis from my understanding. My opinion, if you are able to play Crysis at all with a 3850, you are doing pretty damn well actually.
And of course, try the previous and see how it compares. If the 8.6's do better for you, stick with them. The only time I ever upgrade a driver is if I am having issues with the previous. If the new one makes matters worse then I go back. I used the nVidia 94.24 drivers well into them releasing 160's before I found one that actually worked better.

They will have to wait a few month until the cat driver fully support the new 48xx chip. Driver development always lags behind hardware development.
