exclamation OpenGL selection issues in Maya! HELP!

I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem with the newer catalyst drivers approx 7.12-8.3... the openGL performance has been steadily dropping so there is major lag in Maya's view port and here's the kicker, there is virtually NO smart selection! It will always select objects that are physically higher in the outliner than those at the bottom.

Here are a few reasons why this sucks. The newer catalyst drivers were completely rewritten and now hardware rendering and high quality rendering now works in Maya which is AMAZING. Before all we got was cross hatched black artifacts covering everything, but with this selection issue Maya is basically unusable.

I am using the catalyst 7.11 drivers as these were the last ones that work with maya correctly.

So has anyone else had these issues?

For reference I am using an X800 mobility with modified drivers to work for the mobile version of the radeon and Maya 8.5

I also tried the hotfix that was recently released to no avail.

If anyone can help it would be GREATLY appreciated
