new gfx card..

looking to upgrade X800 to maybe X1650. (cheapy budget upgrade,
want to play hellgate london.!!)

I`ve got a Athlon XP3000, 2 gig ram.

Is this much of a step up??
or is my machine too old now ?

To be honest with you I would just start saving for better CPU, RAM, mobo and PCI-E GFX card
I think that there isn't much difference between X800 and the X1650 series GPU's in terms of performance.

& you'd start to be cpu limited (unless you're 1280x1024 or larger rez)

the game is shader3 only?

Dont buy any ATI AGP cards or you might not be able to play at all. ATI drivers are all screwed up for AGP users. All they are doing now is supporting Vista DX10 all else is out. If you do get an older card make sure you get or have the old drivers as the new ones wont work with anything AGP.

I might be wrong since im refering to a comparison on 2 different rigs (one with x700 and one with x1650) but x1650 in terms of performance is more like x700 so that would be a downgrade in performance but an upgrade in shader model.

ok so the requirements say shader2... x800 is pretty decent so i dont think you'll have much trouble unless you're doing high rez

& it matches the cpu pretty well
