After failing with the brand new 8.1 Cat, i'll test it. Thanks you for the news

Edit : the setup contains only the display drivers, but these are working. DxDiag tests passed successfully, now i'll see the performances ingame

Edit 2 : its better, i have no more big fall of framerate while playing san andreas. The ramdac is clearly better managed, i'll test the other engines

Edit 3 : Definitvly some improvement, the precaches are better and the ramdac management is better. Lots of graphics glitchs are fixed, but some remains. Bad point : drivers are unstable. 20 minutes on the Lithengine (F.E.A.R) resulted in a crash of the display drivers, and i had a BSOD while launching Half-life 2 solo (Source engine). They rushed that version, but i think the next one will fix a lot of bugs. So, good job, ATI, keep going!

You should be able to use the CCC of catalyst 8.1 with the driver if you want it

AHA! I KNEW it had little to do with VIA chipsets and more to do with something ATI was doing.

Hopefully this "fix" will be incorporated in all subsequent driver releases.

Can you confirm that AGP cards owners just have to install the hotfix as a driver ?

I've seen some people talking about installing Catalyst 8.1 THEN the hotfix...

I just uninstalled the catalyst 8.1 and then i installed the hotfix. I was certainly wrong, but i prefer to keep my system clean as possible, and waiting for the cat 8.2. I am pretty sure that ATI will fix the bug on the next release. They made pretty good work on the internal memory management (maybe rewritten from scratch, because the reacting is really different)

I only installed the "fix". The fix is a complete driver package. (Complete cleaning session before hand)

Results soo far.

Aquamark = 95404
3D 03 = 16894
3D 05 = 10667

Played UT3, no crashes and about the same sort of smoothness, was good before soo can`t really judge it (internal settings required if it runs like a choppy dog).

Results are enhanced by my mobo, Asrock AM2 boost (boosts memory by 12%)

Not bad, not bad at all. I await Omega`s driver`s which have had the hotfix for ages lol

Yeah, i tested now the UT3 with full detail (no Antia alias!) and it works pretty well on my old grandpa config

No more horrible fall of the framerate, really god work . They have certainly heard some pple

Now, i am really glad of my new graphic card, it is finally showing its performances . Like you, i await the Omega drivers. Good luck and thanks omega for his amazing work ^^

I have the sapphire hd 2600 pro 512mb and it is working pretty well (but quite unstable), you are not lucky :-s. Direct3D on the new generation of ATI Agp cards is a big issue since the cat 7.7. The hotfix gives a solution for a larger range of cards, but not for all.

Have you tried the Omega drivers? It worked for me, with lower performances (lower for ME AND when I compare to the 8.1, BUT omega drivers can be a real improvement!!!), and were very stable. If not, just give it a try. If you tested omega drivers without sucess, did you tried an older versions of catalyst? You could try too the drivers on the saphire website, the archive is pretty heavy (~230 meg) and didn't work for me, but why not for you? (you got a different card after all, and i think they didn't made this big archive just for pleasure )

If you tested all the solutions above, just be patient, don't throw your card through the window, and wait until the next version from ATI or the next Omega Drivers.

The problem is visibly a pipeline problem; the textures are corrupted. If you tell you don't have any problem with OpenGl, so your graphic card is working properly and is not defective. It's just a matter of drivers (and patience).

Edit : I corrected some bad english use, im not native, and writing at 5 am (without rest) is a pretty hard work, so, sorry for the inconvenience. It is still pretty ugly, but i try to make some effort

hotfix is the bomb.....for me everything works almost perfect...almost....playin wow getting around 20-30 fps....with my gf4800 i got the same.....is it just me or is there something else wrong with my comp....my little brother almost the same setup the diff is that he has a 3000+ instead and has only 1024mb ram and a 3 year old ati gpu(dont remember model)......can it be that the drivers need more time to get better??

Yes, it is just a matter of time, they made lots of good work these last weeks : Catalyst supports now HD 2XXX Series, 3xxx series on both Vista and Xp operating systems, an "official" hotfix for the AGP cards, etc. So, i do not blame ATI anymore, it is just a matter of time. Now, we know they are aware of the big issues and working hard to fix it.

For your issues, use the catalyst crew feedback. It is definitivly the best way to help the devs.

We never know, but check your drivers. Especially your chipset drivers. Try to change the values of aperture and fastwrite on the bios. Check that the AGP 8x mode is supported. You can try too the great omega drivers, including a hotfix (for ages ). May be it will help you. I really don't know your computer setup, so i can't solve the problem from here. Just wait or try to fix it by yourself ;-) (and report your issues to the catalyst feedback)

Good luck

ati's hotfix is NOT omega's 7.7 dll fix as a couple people sound like they're thinking

& djgoan, you didnt mention your bro's fps & both of your resolutions

there is still a chance that you're cpu limited from many players/objects on screen

Good news Catalyst crew feedback is really a good thing. This morning i read the known issues. This one is quite annoying (i have it) : http://support.ati.com/ics/support/K...estionID=28927. But now, it will be fixed on the next release. "This issue has been resolved and a solution is now in place. "

So, very good news. Can't wait for the next version

This hotfix gave me some BSOD on hl2 and juiced2. When it's working like in gears of war and the latest need4speed, it's great . I used 7.10 I'll give a shot to 7.7

Hotfix did fix the D3D problem but now I cannot play CoD without a system restart in the middle of play. Also was able to get into Medieval2 totalwar and rome totalwar but the map part is super slow however once you get into the battle it works fine so still something not right with the drivers.

Update:

Had major problems running Call of Duty using these drivers. My system would reboot while playing so I just went back to Omegas latest drivers and hope his version of 8.1 fixes some of these problems.

one week passed, no fix yet. Last news : sapphire is working on the "fix" provided by ATI. Main issue : drivers keep crashing while playing & launch VPU Recover. I hope it will be released very soon, it is quite annoying.

The only game that does not crash is UT3. (and runs perfectly)

Still no news, i installed visiontek drivers. It is just the 8.1 hotfix with CCC inside one setup. So no change at all. UT3 works great but other 3D apps crashes after X minutes.

Issue known from ATI ->http://support.ati.com/ics/support/K...estionID=28927

I don't think it is my powersupply (500w) because all apps were working with omega but slowly. And with the 8.1, i can play UT3 a day without crash, but another game will crash after X minutes (5 to 30 min)

I'm desperate. Sapphire is going nowhere, they posted drivers on 24th and it is the same thing. They yell they are trying to fix it... Ati corrected the drivers page adding (PCIE) next the drivers names for 2400/2600 (very funny...) Drivers & Software

(So i'm pretty f...cked with my AGP one)

If i reinstall omega drivers, the system is stable but slower than a 9800 pro, and if i let the 8.1, i can barely play others games than UT3.

I am lost:
- I tried to change all datas on bios,
- I checked the power supply, it's fine.
- The temperatures are fine.
- The old catalyst were cleaned properly.
- OpenGl is working without artifacts (so the card is not damaged)
- DirectX is installed properly.

So, any ideas? Because I am getting tired, really tired.

I was using the Omega drivers (7.12) with a HIS HD2600XT and AGP. My main game is WoW which I run at 1280x1024 24bit color 1x oversample. The only other application I have personally started was Windows Media Player/Firefox to stream XM radio. However when I alt-tabbed out of WoW to go to my desktop the drivers (I think?) crash. I get my screens (I'm running dual-head) flicker and flash, first screen 1 video single goes out, then screen 2, and this goes on for anywhere up to 2-5 minutes.

Half the time I need to hard reset to get anything to behave properly, sometimes I get my desktop back and can soft reset. It's extremely annoying and obviously unacceptable. I've cleaned my drivers out twice now with Driver Cleaner to no-avail, same thing happens. Sometimes I can tab out once or twice before the drivers crash (if I do get the desktop back I have lost DirectX), sometimes it just crashes the first time out.

My question is, is this a known issue with those drivers? And does (if anyone knows) the new hot-fix, fix this? I've gone back to (gasp) my BFG 7800GSOC Nvidia card but I would love to have my radeon back, without the crashes obviously.

Finally...

I've tried the 8.1 drivers, but just like all of them after 7.7 they didn't work for my Sapphire 1650 Pro AGP, what with the direct3d applications not doing squat.

Earlier today though I've installed the hotfix, and I haven't had any issues since then.
Everything works as it should.

There IS a small fps decrease, but on the other hand I get a small but noticeable increase in image quality.

The only game I've currently got installed though is Prey,
but either way this does get my hopes up for future releases.
Maybe they will actually get their act together again.
I'm certainly rooting for them.

Thanks for a good release ATI !

regards
Davoren

well as Davoren said we can certainly hope but if the 8.2 driver is anything to go by it looks like we will be waiting a few more months still using the hotfix here as 8.2 driver wont install on my Sapphire HD 2600 PRO 512 AGP
I dont wish or want to be negative but my hope is fading fast ...I didnt expect 8.2 drivers to be a miracle fix to all probs. but AT LEAST install on my AGP board

by default, windows auto restarts when a STOP error appears, so can you turn that off & see if a stop error appears?

but if you already turned that feature off then this would be strange

previous drivers were fine? what about hl2 original, or ep2?

HI.
the problem is about hl2 original(first intro of the game ) e with hl2 episode one (just at the end of the first loading icon)

now i've turned off the automatic restart of windows and it show a BSOD with no specification of the error just color blue.

I've played without problem almost a year ago with cata 7.6-7.8 i think.

after my forced restart from bsod in the windows system log there isn't the cause of the BSOD but there is a strange error about display CRT but i have an lcd widescreen correctly recognised by CCC

There is a new hotfix at AMD customer care.

Unfortunately all I get when I run it is "No hardware found that matches this software".

Currently using the shiped drivers. But like with catalist 8.3 all 3D apps hang after a few minutes or less.

I sent my HD 3850 AGP card back to Newegg after having it almost a month.
ATi is not supporting the card and the drivers are just buggy as all hell in most games for me.
Never seen so many black screens and vpu recovery.
The best I could get was running the cat 8.2's and even then the openGL performance was terrible and some d3d games like WoW and Oblivion had the black screen problem.

I was also suffering from the powerplay bug.

The card did allow me to play Crysis and CoD4... but until ATi proves they can at aleast support and stand by the 3850 AGP I'm done with them.
