Sad Hardware problem

Hi guys,

I bought this system just a 2 days ago:

Pentium IV 2,53 GHZ
Intel D845PEBT2 mobo
120 GB MAxtor 8 MB cache
512 MB PC 2700 memory stick
300 Watt Case
Lite-on 16 * DVD
Lite-on 52*24*52 CD-RW burner

Went from a athlon 1GHZ

i took my videocard from my athlon to my pentium IV, which is a hercules 3D Prophet FDX 8500 LE (Didn't really feel the urge to buy a Radeon 9700 PRO just jet, cause most games don't even use all the directX 8 features yet), install of windows went fine, installed al updates, installed latest omega's.

Installed a few games: MGS2, MOHAA, Mafia.

played for a couple of minutes an BAM, suddenly i get colored vertical lines on my screen, en my computer hard locks.

Never had this problem with my athlon.

tried on both Windows XP Pro SP1 and Windows 2000 SP3

So my question is:

what is causing this problem????

1. Faulty Memory stick??
2. CPU to fast for my video card??

ouch! But with that kind of lock I would not say its your memory or your CPU being too fast for your 8500.... Just some random thoughts/things to try:
1. uninstall all ATI stuff from add/remove proggys and reboot
2. run Driver Cleaner (linked from home page on left) and reboot
3. apply cat 3.2's and Control Panel on fresh

try that first ....

thanks shuki but that doesn't help, i even tried installing the catalysts fresh and then installing omega's over the catalysts, but that doesn't help either,

If you can borrow a more powerful PSU around 400 Watts. It sounds like to me that you system is under powered.

Hmm if it was underpowered it would just shut down, but it doesn't do that, it just hangs with vertical lines, but anyway i found a new bios for my mobo on the intel site, and a newer bios for my radeon, going to check it out.

with those vertical bars like that I'd almost say its either your card or your mobo (hardware vs. software) Is the AGP set to 4x in BIOS? and other BIOS settings correct dealing with the GPU (ie voltage etc..)? Maybe those BIOS flashes will help! *fingers crossed*

Tried those bios flashes, still no go, just if like my radeon died, cause in my other system the athlon 1 GIG it worked perfectly,

Windows is rock solid, an blistering fast, but in 3D games, it just F*CKS UP,

EDIT:

i tried it in my older system again, and it stills works perfectly, so it must be:

System to fast, or something like that.

Which BIOS version does the Hercules Radeon card have?
Have you tried to contact Hercules tech support?

theres no such thing as a system too fast for your r8500 It is not that. I would say its your mobo since your card works fine in other rig. I'm clueless when it comes to intel anything but I would start asking around about your mobo and r8500 conflicts and solutions....

Hmm,

this is a strange one..

a couple of months ago i was running a 9700pro in a D845PESV - which should be a pretty similar board and there were no concerns.

Off the top of my head...can you try running your ram at 266 instead of 333 or less agressive timings? Or alternativley clear the CMOS and allow the board to run at bios defaults to see how it goes.

you could also try to underclock the 8500 - see if that helps (probably wont but worth a try).

Finally you could try the oldest set of cats you can find...see if its a driver issue.

EDIT* just thought - do you have access to another card/PC - a friends or relatives? Try switching your card for theirs and see if the 2 systems exibit the same symptoms...

Try contacting Hercules support first. They might tell you something that would help.

Sad

K guy's,

Found out what it was, my radeon 8500 is offcially dead , case was the fan was spinning to soft, so the chip overheated, and that's why it crashed over and over.

So only option left was to buy his bigger brother, and you all know what that is,

Radeon my trusty companion for years, Rest in Peace, now it's your bigger brother's turn to kick some butt.

i just saw the thread... well vertical colored lines (green red black) usually mean hardware failure... it happens some times when you oc the core much

id recommend to remove the card and install it again but there probably is no reason to do so now

Zulan, I thought you had already tried it in your old system and it worked perfectly
still sorry to hear about your loss...

but a good excuse to upgrade nonetheless
and ATI offers a standard 3 year warranty on their cards. Would yours still be under that time period? unless of cousre you've voided your own warranty

If it is dead why did it work in the other system? You said you put it in the other PC and it worked fine- didn't you?

What kind of card was in the Pentium machine before you put the 8500 in there?

I would vote for the PSU -- you are well under the minimum requirement, given your system.

No, the symptoms would not just be "it doesn't work". Your rails are going to be under powered, which can cause lots of weird behavior.

I'm here because I searched on "Vertical Lines". Wanna guess why?

I'm running a sapphire 8500/64 @275mhz and half way through any high intensity 3d I get these lines too. Everything was totally fine with my athlon xp2400, k7s5a, 512 of pc2700, 500w ps, Cornerstone 19" p2460 AG monitor, omega plutonium 1.1.07 drivers until I installed the Omega 2.4.43. I tried 3dm2001se and ut2003 timedemos and 1/2 way (+/-) through each I get these vertical lines.

I did as Omegadrive says and uninstalled ati control first, and tried every combination (i think) of the DDC en/disable and DirectX Override Refresh Rates in ATI CPanel, but none would allow me to get through everything. So I said, ok, who cares about benchs? TRY BF1942! Sorry, same thing after 30 sec.

Looks like I'll try what the guy above suggested about 'driver cleaner' or something but this doesn't look good.

Have used the omega drivers for quite some time now on 4 different 8500s, and they always did well.

UPDATE.

My card if fine.

Used the cab cleaner, driver cleaner as suggested.
Reinstalled the 2.4.43 again, because the 1.1.07s are a year old. SAME Vert Line / Lockup PROBLEM.

Used the cab cleaner, driver cleaner as suggested.
Reinstalled the 1.1.07s. NO ERRORS.
Goes through the ut2003 demo giving 98.52/ 53.13 fps same (+-) as before.
(Does not Vertical Line me and lock up in the third test as it did every other time with the 2.4.43s at the exact same spot.)

I'll let some others play around with these for a while, but maybe I'll try the ATI Cats in a few days. Make sure my systems ok as it appears to be before I mess around anymore. (Us old guys tend to be like that...)

(w2k/sp3 forgot to say...mbm temps 40chipset/44cpu)
