How to install Omega Drivers 3.8.360 (7.4) with unrecognized card (X1650)
Hello,
first of all, after being unable to install the Omega Drivers with my Sapphire X1650 AGP, i just used official Catalyst drivers 7.5, bu really waiting for some news from OmegaDrivers. I used the official drivers with some, bad, instability and weak perfomances, so i decided to try latest ATI drivers. Well, in short, Catalysts 7.6 7.7 and 7.8 just transformed my pc in a nightmare (SMARTGART not working, crashes, etc...) so, my final decision was to try to install OmegaDrivers 3.8.360. It was a success. Now everything run pretty smoothly. So I decided to share what I have done to allow the Omega setup to install the drivers for my card. Instructions apply to Windows XP. NB: My system is localized Italian, so i apologize if some translation doesn't correspond exactly. Step 1. Find your card vendor ID: Goto in Devices management and double click your card Click the 'Detail' tab. Select 'hardware ID'. You'll have something like: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71C7&SUBSYS_0850174B this is what you need. Doing the same for the Secondary, you'll have something like: PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71E7&SUBSYS_0851174B this is what you need. Now, you need the 'Core Name'. This is a very important thing because without it you cannot use the OmegaDrivers settings (i'll put more advice later). An easy way to find it is to install Aty Tray Tools. Once it's installed, right click the systray icon and choose 'Hardware'->'System Information' The second line of the information box should contains the 'Core Name'. Mine is RV530. Step 2. Install Omega but the drivers: Install the Omega Drivers but, when the setup asks you if you want to install the drivers, answer 'NO'. In this way you have in the OmegaDrivers install folder, usually <program files>\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.360, the whole uncompressed setup files. Step 3. Modify the files (be careful, always make a backup copy of the files before proceed): These are the files you need to modify to add your card: CX2K_RAD_OMEGA.ini - in <program files>\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.360 INSTALL.ini - in <program files>\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.360 CX2K_RAD_OMEGA.inf - in <program files>\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.360\2KXP_INF CX2K_RAD_OMEGA.inf - in <program files>\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.360\2KXP_INF\FW-On CX2K_RAD_OMEGA.inf - in <program files>\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.360\2KXP_INF\FW-Off the 3 'inf' files must be edited separately and not overwritten. The changes to do are identical. In both the 'ini' files you have to modify the R6 value, in every place you find it. From the Vendor ID string look at 'DEV_71C7' (this is my value, your value can be different, that's why you need to find it as in the first step) and substitute 'DEV_' with '0x' (zero-x, it's hexadecimal symbol). Put the string '0x71C7' (as before, it's my value in example) in between any of the other hexadecimal values you see separated by comma. Do the same for the Secondary device. In all the 'inf' files you have to add the strings related to your card in the 'ATI.Mfg' section. What you have to search for? You need to find some card that have a reference to 'ati2mtag_<core name>'. For me it was easy to find something with a reference to 'ati2mtag_RV530'. This reference points to another section that contains the settings for the card. In my example (my real situation), i found this: "Sapphire RADEON X1600 XT (Omega 3.8.360)" = ati2mtag_RV530, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71C0&SUBSYS_0880174B "Sapphire RADEON X1600 XT Secondary (Omega 3.8.360)" = ati2mtag_RV530, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71E0&SUBSYS_0881174B I have just copied them and modified the ID String to the one i found in the first step. I added then: "Sapphire Radeon X1650 Series (Omega 3.8.360)" = ati2mtag_RV530, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71C7&SUBSYS_0850174B "Sapphire Radeon X1650 Series Secondary (Omega 3.8.360)" = ati2mtag_RV530, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_71E7&SUBSYS_0851174B I have done it for all three 'inf' files. Step 4. Save everything and (re) install OmegaDrivers from the <program files>\Radeon Omega Drivers\v3.8.360 folder or using the link in the start menu. DON'T USE THE ORIGINAL DOWNLOADED PACKAGE OR YOU'LL LOSE ALL THE MODIFICATIONS. Now the card will be recognized and everything will finish without problems. VERY IMPORTANT: if you don't find any card with a reference to your card's 'Core Name' or there is not a section related to your card's 'Core name', the installation could be successful, but the card could not work properly. Without the 'Core Name' section, it's better to stop this procedure. If you feel to be able to do, just try to look at the values in other sections to build the section for your card (but i wouldn't do this). I hope this guide is written enough clear (I'm not english native, so be patience) to make some other people angry with ATI official drivers to use the always good OmegaDrivers (even if they are still at 7.4 my games run much better than with the official 7.5). I have everything working pretty well, now and I am happy, but be aware that I have done nothing around the drivers, nor tested anything except my card (Sapphire X1650 AGP), so try this under your responsibility. This info is released 'as is', and I'm not responsible for any problem you can get following these instructions. A final note: when the OmegaDriver developer stops raiding in WoW? We all love this drivers. |
