Resolution issues when fullscreen applications

Hi, I installed the Omega driver set on my laptop:
Dell Inspiron 6400
Native Res LCD 1280*800
ATI X1400

Previously using the CCC drivers I had been setting my LCD to 1280*768, before I found out that it wasn't the native resolution. When I ran games it was always fullscreen, that is stretched entirely. When I ran oblivion at 800*600, it would run fullscreen as a widescreen (no gaps on the left or right side).

Since I installed the omega drivers, it no longer does the whole stretch thing. When I ran the laptop for the first time after installing omega, the 1280*768 resolution wasn't stretched and I found the top and lower sides of my LCD screen were blank, so I adjusted it to 1280*800 and its now it fills the screen.

My only problem right now is that when I run games no longer in widescreen, the resolution is actually kept to that resolution. I ran oblivion at 800*600 and it expanded to fill the top sides, but the left and right sides were blank.

Currently the only resolution I can use to fill out the gap is the 1280*800 res which is too GPU extensive (I want to run a lower res)...

The odd thing was that when I used the CCC drivers playing oblivion at 800*600, there wasnt any noticable stretching... Is there a way fix this?
