Yep thats the chipset im using. VIA K8T800. I looked into purcashing a new nVidia 8800 gts 612mb card today. unfortunatley it is well over $1000 nz which i am not willing to fork out on lol. If u have any information on how to tweak the setting or whatnot that would be good but if not thanks alot for all the info you guys have given me so far

Hmmmm, I am not an expert on tweaking these systems into operation.

First, turn the option for AGP FAST WRITES, OFF , (Disabled). And see if that helps.

One of the main items in the CMOS setup that may help reduce the problem frequency is the AGP driving control. which is currently set to auto.

The driving force value is not automaticaly determined on this VIA chipset, even though they have an auto setting in the setup that simply sets a default value that should provide the most compatibility. (The driving force should be determined automatically by the AGP chipset on a regular basis so as to adjust for voltage and power changes in the system, temperature changes, as well as different characteristics of the AGP graphics card.)

You may have the ability to select or enter different values, but the process is strictly trial and error and can be hugely frustrating.

Another possibility is to look into a system bios upgrade. I can not say if a specific system bios will fix the problem but the system bios does contain that default driving value I mentioned above.

A 3rd possibility is to try chipset drivers from VIA rather than any that may have come from NEC.

The really huge difficulty here is that none of these items are for the inexperienced. We are talking about serious troubleshooting that requires quite a bit of in depth understanding, not to mention experience.

But like I said, it is all very hit and miss.

Hopefully Dyre or one of the other mods may have some useful suggestions
for you.

Hmm just went to the VIA site and there dont seem to be any driver updates available for download. If you could give me a set of values for the driving force that i could experiment with, or the limits of where i could push the values to would be really awsome. I dont want to stuff the thing by playin' around too much while not knowing what im doing. Ive been using windows since it 1st came out so i have a lil bit of experience but not when it comes to this sorta stuff so any those values would put a grin on my face. Big thanks to Catalyst and Dyre for all the info!!!

Hmm just updated the drivers with out a morsel of luck.. I have alot of patience and a fair bit of time to work on tuning the settings in the BIOS so any guidelines would be cool. I have fastwites disabled, agp texture acceleration disalbed, AGP speed back to X8 (X4 didnt seem to change anything) and aperture size at 256m.
Edit: also reverted to driver version 8.301 by ATI. Stil no luck at all.
For the driving control i set it to manual and left the same setting (9B) and it seemed to crash even faster. This is really frustrating but i am extremely determined to solve this as i dont really want to by a new graphics card as the 9550 is running every thing completley fine until i crash.

As I said previously, I really have no love lost toward VIA chipsets. I'm not alone in that, either. Many, many other experienced enthusiasts have pretty much the same feelings.

At any rate, check out this 'How to' guide. I hope there's some gems in there for you:

I have been reading on another forum about a guy who also has a VIA chipset with a radeon 9550 256 MB graphics card and he solved his problems by :

My graphics card problems are now fixed!!!!!

I changed my CPU - AGP to PCI - PCI, now I no longer have any crash's. My games are a bit 'jerky' from time to time, but what the heck! It works!!!!!!!!!

Any info on how to do this would be great guys!!!

I don't follow what the guy did either. ???

Would have been nice if he'd have given more details.

My best guess would be he changed the graphics boot preference in the CMOS setup to set PCI first rather than AGP.

But that makes absolutely no sense to me as the solution to this type of problem.

In any case that is easy enough to try out and should't do any harm. Just go into the setup screens and look around for the option. Might be in the same section as the FASTWRITE option. But it is specific for each bios.
