Lost 1280x1024 resolution for games
Hi, I recently upgraded my machine with a 9700 Pro and was wondering why I now can't seem to enable 1280x1024 in certain games. This resolution seems to only work in UT2k3 and the games that don't support it are: Freelancer, CnC Generals and IL-2 Sturmovik. The closest resolution I can get is 1280x960. My machine specs are:
ECS K7S5A, AMD 1800XP, 1GIG PC2700, Audigy OEM and of course a ATI 9700 Pro running Omega 2.4.07
Though it is not that much of a problem I am curious why only UT2k3 supports it. Other than this tiny thing I must say that ATI has put out a great card which I would recommend to anyone. I heard a lot of bad things about ATI's drivers before I bought the card but after trying the CAT 3.1 and now the Omega 3.2's I think they are just as good any other video card driver (nvidia) that I have installed and the support is imho better than Nvidia's.

Have you re-installed your monitor in hardware device manager? It might work.

BWX232 - yup I just tried it after reading your reply. Didn't change anything. I think I am going to try changing my monitor to a plug in play monitor instead of using the drivers that winxp provides for it. Hopefully that might help. Thanks for the help though.

Try going to display properties-->settings-->advanced-->displays-->monitor..... then, disable the ddc check and specify the settings for your monitor manually.

I tried the dcc check settings and it didn't change anything. Strange that it only works in games using the Unreal Engine. Oh well I guess 1280x960 will be good for now in most other games
Thanks for the replies everyone...

its good to hear you are happy with the card and support !
one thing I would like you to try if you have a little patience and this is annoying you as much as it would me is to deinstall the driver set you are currently using and clean your registry, then try installing ATIs offical 3.2 driver set. Checking if the 1280x1024 resolution is available.
if this works and you want to use omegas set, try reinstalling the 2407 set over the top of the offical ATI. then see if its available. id like to get to the bottom of this one.

Sorry it didn't work, good luck in solving your problem. Just wondering something, If you are using a refresh rate fix, you can enable certail resolutions to work, and only those resolutions- and at certain refresh rates. But this may be an NVidia only problem. I won't know until I get a 9700pro of my very own.

I have no trouble, so far, selecting 1280x1024 for games using any of the ATi and/or Omegadrive drivers. This is my 'preferred' resolution for the Desktop, too.
I wonder if you've tried setting your Desktop to a different resolution and then selecting the one you want for the game. I know in one set of games I've played, it wasn't possible to also use the same Desktop resolution for the game's.
Just a thought.

Zardon, I will try it first thing tomorrow morning and see if it works...hmm I also use 1280x1024 as my desktop resolution so I will try setting it lower/higher and see if that makes a difference.
Now if that Devastation mp-demo would just hurry up and get released

I have only experienced this problem with C&C Generals. I am still running the 1.0 version and have not applied any of the patches for the game--I believe the current release is 1.4. I'm using a flat panel monitor where the max resolution is 1280 x 1024. I was just curious of the performance of my 8500 at 1280 x 1024 resolution with the demands of C&C Generals, but I can live with 1024 x 768 resolution in C&C Generals. Everything else is 1280 x 1024 with no problems. I've played Age of Mythology and Medieval Total War at 1280 x 1024.

Well guys I tried loading the ATI 3.2 Cat's and seeing if that might help ... but it remained the same. I also changed my desktop resolution to 1024x768 and 1600x1200 and I still wasn't able to select 1280x1024 in any games except UT2k3 and the Raven Shield demo. I also installed the new Omega's on top of the ATI Cat's like Zardon suggested but it didn't change anything. I am not sure why this one resolution doesn't seem to want to work in anything but UT-based games but I am fairly sure it is not a monitor problem because I have had 1280x1024 running in Generals with my Geforce3Ti200. Maybe it was introduced when I reinstalled WinXP when I put the 9700 Pro in?
I will keep trying to figure this one out.. but I have a feeling that the 3.3 Cat's will be out before I do. Hmm maybe they might get rid of this wierd issue :-)

Three12 have you applied any of the patches to C&C General to see if that corrects the problem?

Three12,
Start up Windows in Safemode. Go to Device Manager and remove ALL instances of the monitor. This includes all Default and Plug n Play monitors...everything.
Restart in normal windows and let it redetect your monitor. That might correct things.

I tried what you suggested Dyre ... it didn't change anything. I even hooked up a spare 19" Samsung that was being used by another machine outta despiration, still the same results. It's strange that only unreal engine games are able to run it at 1280x1024. It must be something with the games themselves, maybe how they select resolutions or how they integrate with directx or the videocard drivers?
