which 6.12 version to get???
So which is the best?
I currently have catalyst 6.12 installed and i notice a minor jump in performance but a major jump in image quality compared to omega 6.9, im really happy with them. Now i hear that ngo 6.12 and warcat 6.12 are out. Which of these is better and should i download them because there better than catalyst 6.12? (i hear ngo has traditionally been better but warcat vastly improved IQ [i.e. 2xAA=4xAA] in the 6.12 version) Anybody got any advice/benchmarks?? |

Im using the NGO 6.12s and Im very happy with them! Great drivers, and no CCC to deal with.

If you play the games that are Warcat optimized then I would use them. If not go for the NGO. I used both, but for me the Warcats are better because of the games I play (HL2,HL2ep1, Oblivion)and I didn't and you don't have to install CCC with them. I use ATI Tray Tools. Tried WoW with the supposedly "optimised" Warcats 6.12, only to check a frame rate decrease compared to my good old NGO 5.13. Running a X800XT PE btw, so are those drivers aimed at the more recent cards, like the 1900 ? |

When you have old hardware like you and I, the updated driver releases will not improve general performance. The only performance increases we will see are game specific, if there was any bug fixes or optimizations for the specific games we play then we see that performance increase. Unless the third party modder drastically reduces I/Q then they will be in the same ball park as far as FPS and bench scores as the official drivers. Like you stated, it is a different story when it comes to newly released hardware. The reason most people use third party drivers are for the package and the reduction of bloatware like CCC and just to be different. |

For a Pre-X1K card, I'd go a bit beyond 5.13 (if the CPU is dual core or Hyper threaded), as that was about the first of the dual thread DirectX tweaks, and they were refined for a release or two after that. Anything beyond that for the older cards is mostly bugfixes, with a lot of the bugfixes being to the CCC monster.
Currently on ATI original 6.9 with my X700Pro, and not sure about performance, but it's certainly a smooth & stable driver - many of the others threw a LOT of .net framework shutdown errors. Still holding fire and watching Tweaktown's reviews for any significant ups or downs with the X800, as that should be a predictor for all the pre-X1K's. 6.12 bumped some up, some down http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/10...006/index.html So watching for 7.1 (6.12 results... 3dMark 2005 - flat/down, 06 - generally flat, HL2 - some big drops). The big story for 6.12 seems to be huge gains in "Company of Heroes", from top to bottom and the X850 too - from the way it scales from high to low resolution, and across the cards, it looks like CPU efficiency is a least half of the gain, probably more.
