VPU recovery/BSOD Age of Empires 3 engine
Just letting you guys that play Age of Empires 3 or Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends know of a problem I've had with the Catalyst driver. I'm not sure of which sets it applied to, but I've been having these issues for at least 3 months. I'm submitting a bug report to ATI as well.
I was getting random VPU recovery's and blue screens regaurding the ati file ati2exvv.exe or ati2dvag.dll. I checked power, drivers, and memory with no results. I even killed 2 of the CLI.exe so my clocks would stay low. Didn't help any, I would crash out of the game within 10-20 mins. Then I decided for the heck of it to disable VPU recovery and no crash since. This problem is not specific to the x64 drivers, as I tried installed xp pro 32bit with no difference. Also, all other benchmarks/games worked fine. Bottom line: VPU recover is kicking in when the graphics card is working fine and causing my system to crash. |

i've played AOEIII on my machine for ages and have never had a problem like yours (yes i have VPU recover on). Might by a problem that only affects X1900 cards or something like that as it runs brilliantly on my X800GT. Mention that to ATI in your bug report Retarp

Hi, just wanted to stop by and say that I have had the same problem. I have an x1900xtx and I have the latest drivers. I play Age of Empires 3 and I get that damn VPU recover message now and then. The problem is limited to Age of Empires 3 and does not happen elsewhere. I also run a dual-monitor setup with a couple programs that change the look of my desktop. After this cursed error, my primary and secondary monitor switch places, putting the start bar on the wrong monitor. A reboot rixes this, but it is damn annoying. I have a cousin that "claims" to have a 7950gx2, but my brother tells me that he really does have an x1900xtx like me. He has never mentioned any problems with Age of Empires 3, as he plays just as much as me. However, it might just be part of his wanting to pretend he has a better computer than me. He is weird like that... Today I'm going to try turning off VPU recover to see if it is falsely thinking that my display drivers arn't responding. Hopefully, I won't get a GPF...

I play the game fine with it off, so maybe its just a case of false alarm.
