Games lock up after 30 secs plus other problems

I'm having major problems with my 9700 pro from Ati

I have a p4 2.53 ghz cpu with a Shuttle AV49N P4X400 motherboard and I'm using the onboard AC97 sound and onboard Lan and a Ati 9700 pro. I installed Windows Xp Home installed the latest Via 4.45 4in1 drivers then installed the latest 3.1 Ati drivers and then Directx 9 . I turned off fast write (off by default in bios) . When I go to play any game or do a benchmark in 3d mark03 my pc locks up after about 30 secs only way I can not get this to happen is to use either the windows xp default agp driver or Via's 4.38 agp driver which are both 4x from what I have read but when I goto options in the Ati control panel and click details it says 0x agp even though smartgart says 4x and agp texture acceleration is now faded out and disabled in dx 9 Diag tool. The only way I can get Agp texture acceleration on and enabled in Dx 9 is by using a Via 8x agp driver but then no games will work for more than 30 secs and Smargart won't let me drop down to 4x agp it automaticly switches back to 8x upon rebooting. I also can not change my Agp speed in the bios I can only change the aperture size from agp mode to 256mb. Which I have the apeture set to 128 everything else is set to the default setting which is either disabled or auto.

Wrong. You have problem with crappy VIA chipset.Do yourself a favor and buy a decent mobo.

uninstall the 3.1 then reinstall from the device manager. this will remove the smartgart, which is ,i think the issue here.

You will need to install the driver to a location that you can find, and just before it installs select CANCEL then install from the Devicemanager, by selecting the path to where the 3.1s are at. If this is too much ,use Omegas latest. His drivers have the smartgart removed.

And for the asshole that said via chipsets are bad... im on a Kt133a right now and have NO PROBLEMS!!!!!! EVERR!!!!!!! . you just have to learn the ins and outs of windows. and your MB. Also install DX9 before the drivers. Hope we can get this working for you.

Did you re-install the Cat 3.1 drivers after installing the new Via drivers?

It is true that the KT400's sometimes have problems with 9700 cards Have you tried raising the AGP voltage to 1.6 or 1.7v? That has helped a lot of people with KT400+r300 problems...

Thanks for the help I'll try this out but what about the 8x and 4x agp issue witht he Via P4X400 chipset since i won't be able to change my agp speed from 8x to 4x unless omega drivers have a way of doing this since my mb bios gives me noway of doing this

Have you updated your BIOS too? The option might appear (unlikely, though) in later BIOS revisions....

dont wory about the 8X agp right now. And the voltage tweak is a real fix, but one thang at a time....

We can get into a lot of hardware tweaks, but the software needs to be flushed out some first, AGP Texture Acceleration should be enabled!!!, i ran into this with the 3.1s if i dont install from the Device Manager....

More info would be good like your Bios version {mb} and your Powersupply: type ,watts..ect

stupid fuck read before you answer
we `re talking here about p4 via chipset P4X400 ,which is by the way an utter crap ,not about obsolete athlon chipsets

GT86 i apologize for my harsh words, but i really think that best thing you can do is to sell mb and get another intel chipset based mb

Talicni_Tom, karlotta, no more petty fanboy bickering out of either of you again in this thread.

EDIT: GT86, before you start thinking about buying new hardware, it would probably be best to try and fix what you currently have here. Can you post the specs for your entire rig? PSU spec, CPU, mobo + rev, etc.

well guys I think the new bios update they just came out with did the job or maybe the order i installed everything this time did it . I installed Madden 2003 and let it play for about 10 mins without a problem where as before it would lock up 30 secs to a min into a game. I'll redownload 3Dmark03 tomorrow and see for sure then . Thanks guys for all your help and tips but hopefully i won't need them now
