i posted this in the news thread, but ill put it here too.
i dont think these are actually 6.8s that were released. i just installed them, and even though the file name says 6.8, looking at the ID in the control panel it says 6.7. performance is the exact same as 6.7 also. right after the install. ![]() Edit 2 - odd.... the driver date says its 8/2/06, so it sure looks like it should be 6.8.

Yeah same issue here, reads as 6.7 but driver version and date are newer then the 6.7 cat release of last month.
Any plan to release and post the 64bit driver correctly this month?

Impressing performance improvements! Very, very impressive. I have them installed and am about to test them till they drop down on their knees and bleed (yes, im talking about the drivers). Will report what i find. However, i must say, the opengl improvements is something im very glad to hear about.

3Dmark06 runs the same as before (4.8k points). The same can be said about FEAR (min:35, avg:62 - 1280X1024, 4xAA 16xAF, everything else on max (softshadows off)). But then again, the DX improvements seems to be for 256mb cards - so it will be intressting to see results for those cards (my card is a 512mb one).
I also played a level of Prey. I run the game maxed out, 1280X1024 with 6xAA (Adaptive AA enabled) and 16xAF (high quality enabled). The game NEVER slows down (e.g. it runs as butter all the time). Considering that OpenGl is considered ATis 'weak spot', and that Prey is one of the newest OpenGl games - That is one big achivement. I have yet to try doom3/riddick - but those games run better than Prey so im sure ill be happy with the performance in those games too. Its really nice to see improved Opengl support. I was worried about the upcomming enemy territory game, but now i say; bring it on. |

My card is the X1800 XL 256MB, and after three consecutive 3DMark06 runs, my score is actually 15'ish points lower than with CAT 6.7. It's not the end of the world, but according to the release notes I should have seen some performance improvements. But I don't.
My Doom 3 runs at between one or two F-P-S higher than with CAT 6.7 at 1280 x 960 with 8x H-Q AF and 4 x A-A-A. My FEAR benchmarks are also no different in terms of performance than with CAT 6.7. Maybe it's just me ... but so far I fail to see where the CAT 6.8 improves performance on a noticeable extent (not just by numbers in benchmarks). It's better than nothing I guess. I'll keep CAT 6.8 because of the bug fixes.

just played a nice long game of Dawn of War, games seems much smoother now. think i saw my lowest FPS hit 17, used to hit 8.
oblivion i played shortly, i can finaly set water detail on high and not get a performance hit. before if i set it on high it would take me down to about 10fps.

Almost 5 hours after the 6.8 release and still no 64bit support.
This seems to happen every driver releasse, the 64bit drivers are either posted in the wrong spot or not posted at all.

Yes I'd say it is 6.8 in the download as performance has changed from 6.7
Still not happy as rendering of 576i video content with Bob Deinterlacing has been fixed but 1080i has not been. That is still broken. That is on a 9600XT card Odd though that the reverse applies on a 9600 Pro card where 1080i is perfect, and 576i is broken. Previously 576i and 1080i were both broken for Bob d/i. Doen't say much for their testing regime I'd say. The drivers get a rating of 1 from me. Sadly no mention of it in the fixed/issues list in the Release Notes. Perhaps it is now NVIDIA time Last edited by murrayt; Aug 19, 2006 at 12:54 AM. |

Well halfway to keeping me happy. They addressed the Battle for middle earth issue now they need to sort out NeverWinter nights, still im willing to forgive them what with it being such a new game (j/k).
On a more serious note keep up the good work ATI guys. Im sure your not thanked half as much as you should be.

Still no fix for the HDR issues in City of Villains. Catalyst Maker, do you have any news on that? Not trying to bust your chops or anything, but a lot of us CoV players have been wondering since the game came out when we'd be able to run FSAA at the same time as bloom and depth of field effects. Cryptic's made it clear that they can't/won't do anything about it, so any news from ATI about CoV issues would be more than welcome.

Wow, ok ... now my Oblivion crashes after 3 to 5 minutes of play. All I did was un-install CAT 6.7, and properly install (using ATi Uninstal utility) CAT 6.8, I also used Driver Cleaner in Safe Mode to remove all traces from CAT 6.7.
So, I'm going back with CAT 6.7 right now. I can't afford not to play Oblivion until CAT 6.9.
