Best drivers for 9800xt?

I have an old 9800xt and I'm wondering what driver version is best for it. I've always just updated to the lastest each month. But they only do improvements for their latest graphics cards. I rarely see any benifits. My main games are Far Cry, Battlefield 2, and CSS.

If that card has 256 MB, I've found that the Optimized NGO drivers are the best ever! Using the Ultra mod, they handle the 256 MB better than any drivers I've used.

Yes, the latest version is the best.

Also, stay tuned as Rege will be putting up some newer ones in the near future.

All I have to say is wow... I just tested them in Far Cry, and my framerates doubled. I used to get 60-80. Now I get 120-200. The server was kind of empty so I'll have to see what I can do in a full server. This is great though. Thx.

Glad to know they're working well for you, too. Keep us posted.

Wait a minute, Dyre! You say they can handle the 256MB VRAM better than any driver out there?
So can I use them for my card, too?

I won't bet the bank on it, but, I'll bet you can use them and they will out perform whatever you're using now.

Now you've gotten me very curious, Dyre.

I'll give them a try! Thanks!

EDIT:
Is there anything I should be aware of or shall I run the uninstallation of the old driver with DC and the installation of the NGOs just as always?

Follow the normal procedures. Just uninstall current drivers and any control panels/CCC or whatever you're using. Reboot and then install these.

The installation will ask for Ultra for those cards with 256 MB. Check that option.

Well, unfortunately it didn't occur my wanted situation that the frames had really been doubled in games but nevertheless I feel a kind of slight improvement - let's say 5 to 7 fps more.

I've tested it with the Prey Demo (the outer level) and my favorite game DoW Winter Assault (3vs3 mass war).

However, thank you, Dyre, for your recommendation on that driver set. It's good to try out something new.
(Omega all the time has gotten me a little bored <- blasphemy!! )

I know what you mean about Omega's. I've been a fan for years. But, if I can experience better performance from something else, why not use them, right?

Absolutely right, Dyre! Thanks again.

EDIT:
LoL, since I have those NGOs my SmartGart tells me my machine is running in AGP FastWrites-Mode on. Is that really healthy? I mean, it was running without FW before ...

Absolutely let it be if FW are working with good stability. After all, I've ALWAYS and FOREVERMORE have opted to turn ON FWs and have had no problems.

H3X4D3C1M4L will become famous soon enoughH3X4D3C1M4L will become famous soon enough

Drivers don't usually make a night and day difference unless they have a bugfix in them and the bug was really bad.... in my experience anyway
