ATI Catalyst Beta 6.6 Driver & ATI Chuck for CrossFire and Conroe Driver

In order to provide you with the ability to test the world’s fastest processor with world’s best dual graphics solution, ATI is making two special drivers available for press only. The first driver enables two ATI graphics cards to be installed and run in CrossFire mode on the Intel® 975X Express chipset with an Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor or Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme Processor. All performance improvements found in this production candidate driver will be made available to the public the first week of June in Catalyst release version 6.6. We ask that you please test with the publicly available Catalyst 6.6 driver or the press version to ensure the best quality benchmarking experience possible, and deliver results that reflect what the public can expect.

The second driver unlocks the best image quality possible in a game today, delivering simultaneous HDR and AA in Oblivion like the now famous “Chuck” patch. While the driver is not officially supported, we’re making it available to press to demonstrate the astounding gaming possible on Intel® Core™ Duo processors using CrossFire graphics.

So 975X gets Crossfire!

Why would ATI be suckying up to Intel now when AMD is supposed to be purchasing them I wonder....

Are these Conroe/i975 only, or do they also work and have improvenments for other configs such as 3200CF chipsets?! I'm dying to get better CF support.

975 has always had crossfire support and ATI and intel are parters notice
the "intel boards" with ATI press graphics? ATI seems to be big with intel now.
In thier both @ MML5 they had 2 conroe processors system intel boards and crossfire!
among that other systems all intel...

These work on other platforms, installed it on an AMD Athlon64 4400+ with an X850XT PE, performance improvements galore, 10% improvement in Farcry so far, 6FPS+ in HL2, 3FPS+ in Doom 3 and a good 5% improvement in Fear.

Im bored so im going to try these out. I think you need to install the 6.6 beta and the the chuck driver (for conroe blabla..) on them. Thats what i will do and hopefully ill be able to at least boot into windows ^_^

They installed just fine. 3dmark scores (both 05 and 06) are very low (e.g. in 05 i went from 9800 to 9200). However in FEAR i had 8% more in "above 40fps" (total of 80%, min fps=32, avg 60) with maxxed settings 1280X1024 4xAA 16xAF. Oblivion works with 4xAA and 16xAF (i installed the chuck driver over the 6.6 beta and replaced the older files with newer ones). Performance in oblivion seems like before.

I think ill keep these until the official 6.6 are released.

Just to be clear: While these are definitely BETA drivers, ATI has officially released them for public testing, right?

It was about time we had a new drivers version anyway. I had problems with 6.5 and 6.4. I'll try these Beta 6.6 right away.

Thanks to whoever leaked them.

Well, actually, if my installation is correct, these are NOT CAT 6.6s at all. Just check the newly installed CCC from these 'beta' drivers:

That's why when we helped host these we just put their version number. Never liked how when ATI beta drivers are available everyone assumes that they are the next month's version.

Chuck Patch: 8.26.3.0 - May 3rd
Press Driver: 8.26.0.0 - May 3rd

I very rarely ever install BETA anything. Something, though, prompted me to check these out this time.

Yes indeed I confirm that both my CCC and my ATi Tool detects those Beta drivers as being Catalyst version 6.5.

I have done three tests, however, and I noticed a little performance improvement in Half-Life 2.

Catalyst 6.5
Loast Coast
(Right after map loads, without moving character, using net-graph 1)
1024x768, 4x A-A-A (Adaptive) + 16x HQ A-F = 44 to 45 FPS
1280x960, 4x A-A-A + 16x HQ A-F = 34 to 35 FPS

Catalyst 6.6 "Beta"
Loast Coast
(Same conditions as above of course)
1024x768, 4x A-A-A + 16x HQ A-F = 47 to 48 FPS
1280x960, 4x A-A-A + 16x HQ A-F = 36 to 37 FPS

It's nothing huge of course. It's barely noticeable. But with a frames-rate detector like the in-game "net_graph 1" command, then I can technically see a difference.

They might show as CAT 6.5, but there must be something new anyway somewhere in there.

Just because they promise 12 drivers a year doesn't mean they have to be exactly monthly, you could get two in a month and still get 12 a year.

Either way they both have a nice increase for me in all benches and games so no complaints here. Also just for fun I installed both files and got an increase again even though I do not run crossfire .

I think you might have missed what we were referring to.

From the notes provided in the first post:

All performance improvements found in this production candidate driver will be made available to the public the first week of June in Catalyst release version 6.6.

According to that, they're late.

How surprising anyway.

They ain't the first Catalyst to be released that late during a month.

It happened not only with 6.5. And they could have just skipped those to 6.6.

Meh ... anyway, doesn't matter much I guess.

Nope I didnt miss it, just explaining that they dont have to release one every month and still be on target to keep their promise.
